3rd Trimester

Heard of being induced ON due date?

Having this done next thurs!

With DD1 I was a week late before induced.  I guess I'm worried about the risk of not being "ready" enough and going through all that to end in a csection bc it's taking too long.

has anyone been induced on their due date before? Or know someone that has? Would u schedule it or wait??

thanks!

  • I personally wouldn't want to be induced until I was overdue unless it was medically necessary. Like you said your body might not be ready. And from what I've heard, pitocin makes for a rougher labor all around. But that's just IMO.

    Pretty much this.
  • I was induced with #1 two weeks overdue.  Everything went fine and I didn't have any opinion that pitocin made it worse.

I was induced with #2 three days overdue.  Again, all went fine and I didn't think labor or delivery was any different than first time.

Both times I was only 1cm when my OB broke my water.  I'd be induced on my due date, but probably wouldn't volunteer for anything before that date.

I'd wait until as late as possible barring medical necessity.

Exactly! I don't see a reason to force a baby out before it's ready unless there is really something wrong.

  • My OB is going to induce me between 39 and 40 weeks.

I cried every day for more than a week when she told me.

I would love the opportunity to go into labor on my own. Inductions raise the chance of a csection. I don't want an induction or a csection.

As it stands, due to being high risk, my OB thinks that an induction between 39 and 40 weeks is the best option for me and the baby to come out of this healthy, so that's what I will be doing.

  • I was induced with DS1 because I had pre-e. I had a really long drawn out labor. It was terrible. I didn't have anything to compare it to at the time, so I figured that was what labor was all about. Then I had DS2 and I went into labor on my own. Hands down it was a much better experience. I am sure it was partly because he was my second baby, but I fully believe it had everything to do with going naturally into labor. My labor didn't feel forced, and the contractions gradually got more and more intense, vs. being put on Pitocin and being hit with strong contractions with no build up. I would never want to be induced again, let alone opt for a scheduled induction with no medical reason.

I was 39 weeks when I was induced, I've never met anyone who has scheduled an induction because they wanted to be induced. However; this is your baby, this is your body, it's your birth experience. If you want to be induced, and your Dr. is okay with it, then that's between you and your Dr. I am not one to flame someone on their birth experience choices. GL to you!!

  • Unless something goes terribly wrong, I do not want to be induced.  I know baby is due at the end of August and it will be hot, but baby will make it's appearance when baby is ready!  I was late, as well as my siblings, (which is hilarious seeing as we are never on time as it is now) so I am not going to stress if my due date comes and goes.
  • Don't do it!

I tried to do it with DS because I was "done."  It didn't work.  Just ruined a whole day.  We did Cervadil which brought on contractions, a Foley bulb which just made me ugly cry, and then Pitocen (because of the contractions).

And then, every thing stopped.  Halted.  Doc said I could force it into a c/s (no thank you) or I could go home for a week and wait.

Guess who had a second induction at 41w1d that worked and worked quickly?

  • Induction freaks me out. I'm not going to lie. I would want to be very overdue before talking induction. Unless there is a medical reason (GD, Pre-E or failing placenta) then I would be waiting on my body and baby to do what they need to do. I also have a somewhat irrational fear of c-section too. So, that factors in greatly to my decisions.

I wouldn't want to be induced on my due date because that is always an estimate. It can go either way by two weeks. I think your fear of your body not being ready to go and having it end in a c-section is justified.

  •  Did your dr say why?  I would ask if it is medically necessary to be induced at that time.

At my 39 wk appt, my dr told me that she will hook me up to a monitor at my 40wk appt and see if it is safe for me to go for another week or if I need to be induced earlier.

I rather not be induced so I was happy to hear that we will determine on my due date if it is medically necessary to induce me.

  • I was induced 1 week early with my daughter 6 years ago. I had no troubles with it no threat of a c-section and was in labor for 28.5 hours. Water was broken int he last 5 of that. It was not terrible and I would do it again.

This time around I am being induced if little man does not arrive on his own 2 days after EDD bc my Dr will be out of town on DD. Otherwise we would be going that day!

I am already dilated to a 3 and effaced at 60% so Dr. said there is a HUGE chance I will not make it until then so we will just see what happens. Do not be scared of an induction. They know what they are doing and the chances of your body no responding to the meds are very very small.

    Best wishes with you decision!

  • I was induced on my EDD with DS due to pre-e.  I was already dialated to 2 cm+ and it went realtively smoothly.  I was administered pitocin at 7 am and had DS at 4:15 pm that afternoon.  I did end up with an episotomy, but he had (still has) a HUGE head, we are talking 95%+ at every check up.

We did Cervadil which brought on contractions, a Foley bulb which just made me ugly cry, and then Pitocen (because of the contractions).

That right there should have been the first clue your body wasn't ready, and your OB never should have scheduled it.

If cytotec, cervadil, or a foley are needed for an elective induction, it shouldn't even be scheduled. It means your cervix isn't dilating/thin enough to put you into labor with just pitocin.

OP, there's nothing wrong IMO with an elective induction, when it's done correctly.  The only thing you should need is pitocin, if they talk about needing to do anything to thin your cervix, it's not a good idea. My OB will do elective inductions at 39+, but only if you are dilated/effaced a certain amount and baby is in good position.

    Due with #5 April 22, 2015. It's a girl!!!!!

Yes it was planned, yes we know what causes that, no we are not on public assistance, and yes we will be getting cable after this. ;)

Oh I totally agree!  Which is why I'm sitting here complaining at 40w1d :)  Never again.  You learn something every time.

  • I was augmented with pitocin the day after my due date (it was called an augmentation because I was already dilated 3cm and having back labor contractions intermittently). I had pregnancy induced hypothyroidism and my dr. didnt want me to go much further past my due date.

I actually had an excellent experience with my labor. I checked in to the hospital around 930am. I started pitocin between 10 and 1030am.  I got my epi at noon and labored all day. My son was born at 7pm after 45 min of pushing.

  • My SIL was induced on her due date.  It is a really long and painful experience for her that ended in a c-section.  With her 2nd, she really wanted a VBAC but ended up with a RCS.  So yes, I have heard of it.

I would not choose to be induced.  My opinion is, if there is no medical reason, then let that baby grow a bit more!  However, I do understand that there are very real reasons to be induced if you or LO have any medical condition.

I wouldn't totally agree with this. With my DS I was 42 weeks and 0cm when I was induced with cervadil. It work well and I never needed pitocin. My labour was 14 hours from start of induction.
However, I would not be induced earlier unless I needed to.
