Hello,
I am 34 weeks, and trying to make sure I have what I need for our baby boy. Can anyone give me an idea of a basic checklist of clothing that I should have on hand right away? I have various onesies in bigger sizes, but I am wondering how much I should have on hand in newborn size, and what types of clothing. I have heard that some babies do not fit in newborn sizes very long, or not at all at birth.
TIA!

I am just getting rid of my NB clothes so I know exactly what I have. My DS was just under 8lbs and wore NB clothes for about 5 to 6wks. I have 10 onesie type outfits and 4 sleep and plays in NB. I'd buy them used (Once Upon a Child or the like) since most kids don't wear them for very long so they are cheap and in good condition.
ETA: I'd keep the tags on them so you can return whatever you don't use.
Sleepers (Carter's calls them Sleep 'n Play's) worked best when my DD was very little. I liked the ones with snaps because the zippers bunched too much. Regular outfits were cute, but not very practical. We probably had 8-10 sleepers in NB size.
We never used onesies very much in the beginning because it was a pain to get them over DD's head and she was always cold (was 6 lbs at birth). It was easier with the sleepers, and the NB size had the fold over cuffs, so no need for mittens.
I agree with PPs about not getting too much, and having someone run and get you some if you end up needing it. That being said here's what we ended up with for DS2.
10 sleep and plays (we like these best)
6 onesies
2 side snap t-shirts
4 pairs of knit pants
2 "dress up" outfits (for pictures, meeting family, etc.)
2 fleece sleepers (he was born in Oct. & it's getting chilly here then)
6 pairs of socks
3 hats
2 pair of mittens
All of what is mentioned above...
but honestly all babies are different. DS only wore NB for one week, then he went into 0-3's for a few more weeks and then was in 3-6 for a decent stretch but is in 6-9 at 5 months old already (18 pounds). Point being, don't buy too much in any size...you can always buy more down the road if you feel like you don't have enough.
Also, we got a TON of clothes as gifts after DS arrive and we are still getting gifts of clothing. I hit up garage sales last month and pretty much got the majority of DS's clothing gently used (mostly from friends). It's not that we don't have money to buy him clothes...it's the fact that he is growing out of them so fast that I just didn't want to spend a ton of money on them.
Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

We had a few gowns before birth and a coming home outfit. After baby was born we ran to the store and picked up a few outfits. When LO was 2 days old we had to go to the pedi anyway so it wasn't that bad to run into Target for a few mintues to pick up a pack of onsies and pants. You can always order online while in the hospital and get them shipped quickly if you order off amazon. We love sleep and plays for newborns and they do tend to outgrow these in Newborn sooner because they outgrow the length first.
