My personal analysis is that "vintage" has more of a 50s or 60s feel rather than turn of the century names that have been so popular recently.  When I think vintage, I think Marilyn or Judy more than I think say, Mary or Elizabeth.  

 I'm sure there are lots of exceptions.  That is just what comes to my mind.

Funny story about Howard. When my parents FIRST started dating and talking about names for possible future children in the far distance, my mom said her least favorite name in the world was Howard. My dad's response? "Howard is my middle name." He was named after his mother's only sibling. :P
