Solids?

So I originally planned to wait til at least 4.5 - 5 months to introduce solids. However, my little man ate over 40 ounces of breast milk yesterday. We have had to sleep train to get him in the crib and it's been pretty good. He has cried sporadically for 15-20 minutes but self soothes before we go in there and is asleep by 20 minutes. However, he has woke twice the last few nights and had full 5 ounce bottles during that time when previously he would go 10 plus hours without waking. Not sure if it's the transition or he's just needing more food. Anyway... my question is if he keeps up this amount of food would it be bad to give some solids this week when he turns 4 months? I don't care abt sleep but i can't pump 40 ounces a day!

Re: Solids?

  • That's a lot of milk!!  Maybe it's a growth spurt?  I know you probably wouldn't feed him if he wasn't hungry, but are you for sure that he's hungry?  Does he use a pacifier? I know my pedi always gives us a sheet that says to call them if milk intake exceeds 30 oz, so maybe you should call on this one.

I have a new nanny that just started with him so I don't know what he does when i'm gone, but I do know that he will slap the bottle out if he doesn't want it. He doesn't really comfort eat. It could be a growth spurt, but he is also so active that he might just need more food to keep him going... He's either jumping on us, in his jumperoo or doing tummy time if he is not sleeping. He will be an active one! I'm not opposed to formula. I was going to wait til Friday just so I can say he had all breast milk for 4 months (it was just something that made me feel better). I guess I'll try a couple bottles this weekend of formula and see how he does.
  • I started my daughter on oatmeal cereal at 3.5 months. (I know...tisk tisk... flame away!) I started feeding her cereal after her evening feed before she went down for the night. It seemed to help her rest more peacefully at night.

  • I read somewhere that around this age, they eat less during the day because they are more aware and interested in what's going on around them, and then have to recoup the calories at night. Maybe this is what's going on? Is he eating the same amount at night?
  • I meant is he eating the same amount during the day.

He's eating abt 5 ounces more during the day and night. It might just be the crib transition has been tough on him. I guess we'll see if he keeps it up. He was super tired today and slept most of the morning, so it could also be a growth spurt... However, if he keeps this up I think I'll do some solids bc I think he'll be physically ready for them...
  • Have you called your pedi? What does he or she recommend in this situation? Just curious.
