Inappropriate?

My department recently moved into a new building. There is a unisex bathroom that the front of the office uses and a separate mens/womens in the back of the office. I typically use the one in the front because it's more convenient.

With that said, there is a person (pretty sure I know who it is) that takes a daily poo in the unisex bathroom. Now, if you got to go, you got to go, but the problem is they don't use the spray or turn the fan on. Also, they leave poo all over the ring of the toilet when a second flush would do the trick. People are starting to notice and this morning, the smell actually cause me to vomit.

Is it inappropriate to leave a nice, professional sign that states please leave the fan on and use the spray?

I am not the only one that is starting to get fed up with it and most people do follow the unspoken #2 rules.

Re: Inappropriate?

  • Sadly, someone actually had to put up signs in our bathroom asking people to flush because I guess some people weren't.  I don't see any unflushed toilets anymore, so I think it worked.  I don't think there is anything wrong with putting up a sign.  It is not like you are standing outside the bathroom checking the toilet as people come out.

Is it totally and utterly disgusting?  absolutely.  hands down, no questions asked.

However, I dotn think its your place to be posting signs in the bathroom.  Why dont you just use the other bathroom?

I am currently using the other bathroom because of this issue. The bathroom in the front is right next to my office..so on occasion, the smell penetrates my room and with the open door policy at my work..there's not much I can do about that.

I don't see anything wrong with putting up a sign asking people to have some basic common courtesy to use the fan and/or some spray.  So gross.

As an aside - I don't get why people would want to use the unisex single stall restroom for this purpose.  Sure, you're in there privately but as soon as you walk out, if someone else is waiting to use it, they know it was you who stunk up the joint!!!

  • I would put up a sign, but I would be very careful to make it seem cheery and not passive-aggressive or sarcastic.

  • This used to happen where I worked and what's worse is sometimes I would be framed since someone would go in after me and think it was me or at least I felt like they did.  I wouldn't leave a note but I would ask the office to purchase some air freshners for the bathroom and some of those auto timed glade wall fresheners too.

Edit..I changed my mind. Put a note too that's gross.

A warning sign with the person's picture? Yes, that would be inappropriate but comical to the other non-pooers.

If there is someone in the responsible for employee communication like HR or an office manager I would suggest they address the issue. My bathroom is covered with 'look, lean and clean. be a sweetie and wipe the seatie'. I'm not offended.  Maybe you can add a tag line about using spray for odor? If you place a sign in the unisex bathroom I would also place the same signs in the back of office bathrooms so no one feels singled out.
