I barely remember to get them gift cards. But I did forget both Christmas and Teacher Appreciation Week this year. Those teachers sure get a lot of presents.

I can tell you as a teacher that it is not expected and has gotten way out of control. I never gave gifts to my teachers and was blown away when my first year of teaching ended and parents sent kids in with gifts. Some years it feels like it has become another way for parents to compete through their kids at my current school.
So, honestly . . . a hand written note is more than appropriate. Most teachers don't become teachers for the money. (it's the summers . . .ha ha!!). They do it because they really just love teaching kids.
My mom always did them for my teachers so I do them for my kids teachers. I think teachers work hard and are not paid enough so to send them off with a little treat for Christmas and the end of the year is an amazing gesture. I don't think you have to do it but I will always do it. I do gift cards so the teacher can use them for her. I'm sure all the nick-nacks add up.
