DH surgery vent

My DH works for UPS as a driver, and the day after Christmas he slipped on ice and shattered his right ankle. He had surgery two days later and now has 8 screws and a metal plate in his ankle. He wasn't able to drive until mid March and has done weeks and weeks of therapy on his ankle. He went back to work for two days at the end of April, but had leg pain, so after waiting to go to another orthopedic surgeon and a podiatrist they found out one of his screws is sticking too far through the bone and is rubbing into his tendon, causing the pain. So they made him take more leave from work and scheduled surgery for today, to take the screw out.
Well, his surgeon was in network but the only hospital he worked at was out of network so they sent him back to the original surgeon who finally was able to see him today for a consult. They want to wait another 4 weeks to do the removal surgery! I am 34w 5d and I really don't want him waiting 4 more weeks for his surgery! Ugh. It's just an outpatient surgery, should be in and out in less than a day but still, it drives me crazy. Dh has been awesome this whole time, helping out so much with baby prep and going to every appointment since he's been off of work, and making sure even though he's had trouble walking and leg pain that I have been completely taken care of. I just wish this could hurry up and be fixed so he can stop being in pain and we can just focus on the baby. Hoping they get the surgery scheduled sooner rather than later and baby Troy waits til after to make his appearance!

Sorry, I just had to vent!

Re: DH surgery vent

  • I'm sorry this sucks.  How long is recovery after the surgery?

Oh what a mess, sorry you have to be under that stress.  Four more weeks is a bit ridiculous! I had a same day surgery when I was a teen to take two screws out of my ankle and one out from just below my knee.  Totally non-invasive, I had general anesthesia because I was a big baby and didn't want to see what they were doing, but the ortho offered to just give me a general and let me watch lol  I was out of the hospital just after lunch.  Do they realize how much pain he is in? Only one of my ankle screws was painful but that was more than enough.  Poor guy, but sounds like a great DH still taking care of you even though he is hurting.  Hopefully someone can do something about getting him in and out much sooner than 4 more weeks!

  • Maybe they can get him in sooner and hopefully he recovers quickly, what a pain.

  • Yikes! That's a lot to deal with! Hope that the timing works out well.
  • Thanks for your kind words ladies! DH should only have about 2 weeks recovery after surgery, but he can drive the very next day. We are fortunate to have his whole family within about 30 mins from us so even the worst happens and baby decides to come when daddy is in surgery we have plenty of support and someone will get me to hospital and him to me ASAP.
