Wasn't quite sure how to title this one. On Wednesday of last week, Addy came down with a stomach bug that I had had a couple of days before and was vomiting from dinner time until 1:15AM, about 5 times. Her stools are normally firm and "plopable" as I say since we CD, but ever since she got the stomach bug they have been very loose, I guess I would call it diarrhea. She is an average 3 time a day pooper and it has been like this for almost a week now. She is still hardly eating at all and one of the only things I can sometimes get her to eat is certain carbs (Cheerios, Goldfish, rice crackers, etc). I am squeezing some fruit into her but just barely and veggies almost not at all. The quantity she's been eating is certainly less than 1/3 of her before-sickness normal. I am concerned about dehydration because she is barely peeing versus what had been her normal. Right before she got sick I dropped her to 3 nursing sessions a day instead of 4 so she is getting less that way too. The day after she was sick I just did 4 sessions anyway to give her a boost and I gave her a couple of those Enfamil Older Toddler milk drink things with vitamins in them because I had them on hand. She liked those. She drinks just sips of water during the day right now, doesn't seem to want it much (normal for her).
I am all kinds of confused because I don't know what is sickness vs. teething. I am fairly certain she's working on her top 2 front teeth right now ("front" part of the gum is very swollen, but not the "bottom" part of the gum, if that makes sense... so IDK), she just got her bottom 2 within the last month and I noticed a difference in her behavior but it wasn't severe. Now it's severe. She is a totally different child since the sickness but I can't figure out if it's that or teething! She is clingy far, far worse than even her normal. Has a crocodile tear, wailing meltdown if I put her down and have her standing against my leg so I can spread cream cheese on my bagel kind of bad. From the time she gets up in the AM to when she goes to sleep at night. I have little experience with teething obviously. Can this be normal for teething- the constant diarrhea, barely eating at all? I know the clingy-ness, but the rest is concerning me. Last night and this morning I gave her Tylenol but I don't see much of a difference. She has her 15 month appointment in a week so I will absolutely be talking about these things with her pedi if it's still going on but until then I thought I would run it by you ladies to see if this could be normal or cause for concern and what your thoughts were on sickness still hanging around vs. teething. TIA!
Re: health concerns...
When DD teethes, she gets horrible loose stools, her nose runs like a faucet and she's pretty cranky all around. When she got her molars, I couldn't tell if she was sick or teething (which fortunately, it turned out to be teething, then not so fortunately the start of a cold). Sometimes the teething happens at the same time as the illness, or as a result of the stress it puts on them from the pain.
My friend's DS used to throw up when he was teething, so I guess it varies. She thought maybe he had the flu, but he'd be sick for a day, then a tooth would pop up the next, and it happened with almost every tooth he had.
Maybe call your pedi's office if they have a nurse line and tell them what is going on. They can tell you if they want to see her sooner or maybe offer another idea of how to get more food/fluids in her.
Good luck! Sick/teething babies aren't fun.
Sounds like teething to me.
DS ran out of bottom cream at DC one day and his bottom seriously had a rash that was raised a full inch from his skin. They used cream from another baby at the end of the day then called me to come get him because he was out of clean clothes. Bag Balm has saved us for his poor bottom.
We pretty much let him eat what he wants from the meals we have, and some nights I get him an extra fruit item or leftover veggies and he eats no meat, no carbs. When he feels unwell he also hits. Not fun.
