Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How many diapers does your LO go through in a week?

We cloth diaper DD (13 months) and are headed out of the country soon.  We are going to use disposables while on vacation.  I suppose I could just count the number of diapers and the loads of laundry we do in a typical week, but asking just seemed easier. Sooooo, how many diapers does your LO go through in a week? Thanks!

Re: How many diapers does your LO go through in a week?

  • I would say I change his diaper on average about 5 times a day. So...about 35 diapers a week with a few extra thrown in just in case. :)

  • I'd say around 50 maybe... They change him 4 times at school and we do three times at home. (morning, after school, and before bed)

I'll be so curious to see everyone's responses! This is a sore subject for my husband because he's convinced daycare changes DS's diaper way too often during the day.

Daycare uses about 5-6 diapers a day and we use one more before bedtime.  We change him less during the day on the weekends so probably 4-5/day on the weekends.  Long story short - on average probably 40 a week.

  • Daycare changes DS more than I do at home, but I assume that they'd rather err on the side of caution instead of parents complaining that their kids aren't getting changed enough.

    I'd say 5 diapers a day, 35 a week.

  • For us, it's about 4-5 diapers a day. We CD as well, and I would just take the same amount of disposables that you would use of cloth diapers.
  • We use about 6 a day, so 42/week.  It's been more lately because of teething poops.

  • About 5 per day so 35 per week.
  • About 5 per day. But sometimes more depending on when and how many times she poops each day. So to be safe, I'd plan at least 7 per day which would be 49 for 7 days.

  • Probaby between 5 and 7 per day depending on teething, outtings, etc.
  • At day care they have to change the diaper at minimum every 3 hours, more if there is a BM in between. At home on the weekends we'll due about 4-6 diapers per day plus one overnight diaper.  I went through 6 diapers during our travel/flight since LO drinking tons and outputting a lot too.

I would buy the purple pack of overnight diapers in the size larger than you need on the box for sleeping overnight. Then i would forgo store brand diapers since they are hit/miss with us for leaks. not sure where you are going but you can probably always bring more too.

On average, 5 a day. We travel with our CDs though, and it hasn't been a big deal. Our next trip is 2 weeks and abroad, we are using a combo of disposable inserts and regular.

Do you typically use the hotel's laundry service or find a laundromat?  I HATE the idea of making so much trash with disposables, but I don't love the idea of having to do laundry while away either. . . torn!

  • On average, 5-6 a day. So for a full 7 days I'd plan on no less than 35, and probably err on the side of caution and pack 45-50. But I'm an over-packer, soooo ;)

  • I'm pretty liberal with diapers, if it's wet I change it. We also usually have a few trips to the potty that saves a diaper or two, but we average about 7 diapers a day, or almost 50 in a week.

I wouldn't stress about the trash, the amount of wasted energy from the travel especially if you are flying! far far outweighs any impact of bit more trash from disposables for a week.
I get wanting to minimize impact but the relative size here is way off
  • We CD and I count the diapers in my laundry from time to time. I think we use about 9 diapers a day on average, but take into account that you probably change CD's more frequently than disposables.

If you decide to go with disposables for the trip, I would just pack what you need for the trip and buy more when you get there, if you need them.

Haha.  Very true.  Thanks for the perspective.

Chemicals used in the disposables are also a big concern, not to mention using a diaper I'm not familiar with in terms of leaks, etc.  Though in the long run, it just may be easier than figuring out a place to wash the cloth.

We use 67 a day so I'd say 50ish. When we traveled for a week, we just threw a sleeve of diapers in our car seat bag. It was more diapers than we needed, but they were packed nicely then.

While I don't disagree w/ this - the other thing w/ CDs and traveling is I don't want to be experimenting w/ diapers on vacation. My CDs don't leak, pretty much ever. I don't want leaky diapers or blowouts on the plane, in a museum, etc.

If you do have to do disposables I wouldn't worry overly much about leaks with older kids. We had blowouts all the time with babies and that cloth diapers were way better. But once they get to a year the only time we have ever had an issue was during a really really bad stomach bug
  • We cloth diaper and use disposables. If  we did just disposable I'd do 5 a day or 35 a week.

50 seems like an awful lot.

Also, I would consider just bringing what you need for the trip and buying when you arrive. When we flew across the country to visit inlaws they just bought a case of diapers for us. If they hadn't we would have hit up walmart or whatever once we got there. I wouldn't want to pack a ton of diapers for a long trip. It just seems like a waste of packing space.
