Nursery Color

So I am thinking of going with light shades of blue and gray for our little boys nursery.  The room that will be the nursery gets a semi decent amount of natural light (and it has no ceiling light, just a lamp) so I don't want a dark gray, just something really light, and do an accent wall of pale blue where we will put the crib.  Anyone have any experience with picking out pale gray colors?  I'd hate to get something that makes the room too dark!

  • forget the accent wall, do a grey with blue undertones.

  • You can go to Home Depot or Lowes or whatever your home building supply store is and buy little jars of paint to try out. You only spend a couple bucks per jar, but its nice to be able to try colors on the wall and see how they look. That might be the best option for you.

  • We went with a really light gray in the white family City Loft at Sherman Williams. It provides just enough contrast to the white trim and will provide a neutral background for our navy blue and white theme.

  • Just remember that paint dries darker than it looks. I usually go up one shade and then it dries perfectly. But I agree with the PP about buying a sample jar. The paint will look different in the nursery than it will in the store. (Natural light, artificial light, etc.) Paint a bit of the wall and then look at it in the morning, noon, and then night. Paint is always "changing" colors so it's one way to be sure.

Ditto this. That way you can see how dark it will be when it dries. Also if the shades of blue and grey work with each other.

This may seem like a crazy idea but we did it and I love it.
We painted the ceiling blue, a light blue, it's called Bluebell from Sherwin Williams. It is both light and bright enough to be serene, to me, on a ceiling.
It's great to be sitting in a rocker with your little one and look up to see this beautiful blue color.
It's bold and maybe not for everyone, but we love it.

We used grey in our kitchen and it's gorgeous - it's called grey matters by Sherwin williams

  • Thanks for the advice ladies, I'd forgotten that you can now get the little sample size paint to try out.

I love the ceiling idea, unfortunately, our house has stupid popcorn ceilings!
