Working Moms

Lean In. Did anyone else read this?

I just finished it and I liked it pretty well. There were several parts that stood out to me;

1) The thorough and extensive study that found that children in high quality childcare do as well in all areas as children with SAHMs. I always thought that kids in daycare were at some kind of disadvantage though I didn't think it was a huge one. It was so nice to see such a detailed, multi-year assessment of kids in both situations and see that kids in high quality childcare fare just as well and in many areas, better.

2) The part about how women do things like go down to part time, or don't raise their hands for promotions or to take on new challenges because they plan to have children someday. I loved her advice about sitting at the table (participating as an equal in the office) and not leaving before you actually leave.

3. The part about having an equal partnership with your H in order to feel supported at work and at home.

There were plenty of problems with the book, but I liked it a lot and I wondered what other people thought. Anyone else read it?

  • I saw her Google TED-style talk. Does that count? I agreed with most of what she said, but very little of it was new to me. I already feel really engaged with my work because I'm doing what I love, so it was a little hard for me to relate to these hypothetical women she was counseling - I never planned to go part time or take a few years off, so I haven't been in "lean back" mode.

  • I posted about it a few weeks ago. I really liked it and found that once reading it, all the criticisms about her and people not being able to 'relate' to her, etc were not really that valid, though it is definitely not intended for all women in all situations.

    I have since joined the Lean In LInkedin group which has some good articles posted and have looked into circles but there aren't any in my area.

    Here's my post for other ppl's responses:(sorry not clicky)

    I'm a late replier, sorry.

    I'm 2 chapters in, and I like it so far. It definitely has some good material about being confident and highlighting your contributions.

    On a related note, I am leaving for my first business trip since having LO, and I called my mom on the way to the airport. She said to be careful with the rental car, and I told her a coworker was renting the car, and another guy is coming too. She said, "Oh good, you can sit in the back and file your nails or look at Facebook." WTF, Mom? I said, "No, I'd like to be taken seriously as a business woman, so maybe I'll sit in the front and talk business with the other guys." Ha. My mom is a sweet lady but still has kind of a 1950s mindset when it comes to male and female roles.
  • Heard her TED talk, and red the Time Article covering her "new feminism" like what it had to say.

    Not thinking I wasn't going to have kids I don't I was holding back. But once I got more and more pregnant I know I slacked off. Mostly because I was slowly scaling down workload before I left.

    But been back for a month and it all came right back.

    Not feeling at the top of game these days those. Lack of sleep, and a little rusty on my business social skills. But hopefully that will come soon.
