I met with my RE this morning to discus all of our test results and next steps. He suggested that we keep trying naturally for a few months (assuming my TSH number improves, which I'll know by the end of the week) and if that fails, we go to IUI. My insurance requires trying IUI first and if that fails, then they will pay for IVF. We decided to try this month and next month on our own, and if we're still not pregnant, we'll try IUI in August. I have excellent insurance right now. It will cover 100% of fertility treatments. However, my insurance is changing July 1st and while they will still cover 100% of the treatment, my RE will mo longer be in network. This means we will be responsible for 20% of the cost of the treatment with the doctor. Since the hospital is in network, everything done by nurses and stenographers will be covered 100%. If you've had IUI, what was the cost (roughly)? If you were in a similar situation, would continue with the same RE or find one that participates in the new network prior to beginning IF treatments?
TIA
Re: RE results & IUI cost/WWPD?
Glad to hear that your results were so good and Fx'ed the TSH will be, too....
I can't give you any advice with IUI, since I went right to IVF, but I just wanted to tell you that you are lucky to have such great coverage, I am an OOP patient....and in saying that, if you really like this doctor and feel comfortable that you are going to get the results you need, I would be more than happy to pay the 20% for the goal of having a baby. It is worth it, right?
If you feel that you can find the same quality in a doctor that will be in your network, it might be worth some of your time to invest and do some research. Is your IVF coverage the same at 100%? If not, then it might be prudent to have the IUI paid at 100% to help you save for the IVF, if needed..... Just a thought. Hope it helps in your decision and best of luck to you and your family. I am sure that you are excited to get started. Keep us posted on your progress.....
For me personally, I would do as many as you can at 100% coverage. I am oop also and the meds is what cost the most. My RE is part of my network, although coverage only covers testing/ labs, and I love her to pieces. If my insurance changed, to where I would pay 20%, I'd still keep her because I know she will help me with the best possible outcome, the baby I am wishing for.
RE cost is different than an OBGYN 's cost because they are specialized. RE' s cost is going to be much higher. At least it is here in SoCAL.

The IUI itself was $465, however, the monitoring (ultrasounds and blood work) and meds totaled about another $2k, so a monitored IUI cycle is ~$2500 OOP for us.
It would depend on my relationship with my RE and the other options available to me. I would probably at least meet with another, in-network RE to see if I could establish an equal or better rapport and save the 20% and potential coverage headaches that could arise.
