Pregnant after a Loss

PSA: Toxoplasmosis testing

I found out today, you can ask your OB to test you for exposure to toxoplasmosis (that's the infection you can get from cat litter or gardening). If you've already been exposed then you can go back on litter duty (or forget to tell your husband about the results) and can work in the garden without gloves.

I plan to ask about it at my appt tomorrow. I've been gardening since I was big enough to hold a spade so I'm guessing I've already been exposed, if so that will be a big relief.

I thought for sure I'd been exposed since I'd had cats my whole life and grew up gardening and it turned out I was negative!!!

  • I've had cats my whole life so I assume I've been exposed, but its not a routine test at my doctors, I would rather make dh clean the litter box.

Yeah, I would too and I don't even have cats! I think it's kind of one of those chores that he should be happy to help with :):) Maybe that's just me thinking that I wouldn't want that chore in a billion years though teeheehheee

  • Interesting. But think I will pretend to not know. I like getting out of kitty litter duty. My dh never had an issue with it when I did it but as soon as he found out he has to, he immediately started researching the self cleaning kitty boxes that cost a few hundred dollars. I think he is nuts but he is seriously considering it.

This test was not routine at my Ob's office but with my 1st pregnancy it was tested because there were cats in my mom's house. I was not "immune."  However, I tested positive for the actual disease! It was sooo stressful. I ended up having to go to a high risk Ob during that time to evaluate this and see if I needed treatment. After months of repeating testing....It was found that I had a False Positive Toxoplasmosis test. They never tested it again with my subsequent pregnancies. There are other ways that you can come into contact with Toxo - if I am not mistaken, eating pork that is not properly cooked is one of them. I just wouldn't chance it...I would not change the litter box.

  • I don't know.  My brain wouldn't be able to accept the risk, even if I was tested and found to be immune positive.  I'm a scientist and I know all the logic behind it, but my PgAL is screaming louder right now than my logical brain.

The same way that I know that is sushi from a restaurant that I have never had problems with is probably okay.  But I still abstain.

  • I tested negative to both immunity and infection despite having cats, working at a vet, and pet sitting. I was totally bewildered. I can't always get out of doing litter boxes because of pet sitting which my OB wasn't thrilled with, but they told me to wear a mask, gloves, and wash my hands.
