Cranio Cap help

Hi I am in the South Metro and am wondering if any of your babies have had to have a Cranio Cap or a consultation for one but maybe have not needed it.  Just wondering where you went and what you thought of your experience???  Our daughter just had an Assesment/consultation appt last friday through Park Nicollet Clinic,  they said her cranial mis-shape was moderate and at that level our insurance won't cover it.  The Dr told my husband she is borderline to either needing one or not.  Her pediatrician thought for sure they would say to get one on her.  So now we have this decision to make and were thinking of going somewhere else for a 2nd opinion.  Please share any experiences you may have for me as I am at a loss.  Thank you much.

  • Gillette has a clinic connected to Fairview Ridges.  There is a Hanger also down in that area, however, not sure if they do helmets at that clinic or not.  There is a Fairview Orthotics office at Ridges, but they do all their helmets out of the St. Paul office.

How old is your daughter? Ideal time to start the helmet process is between 4-6 months.

Does she have torticollis as well? Some insurances will only cover the helmets after you have tried physical therapy.

It certainly doesn't hurt to get another opinion. Most places don't charge for the eval.

  • We went to Fairview Orthotics and Prosthetics in St. Paul and had a great experience.  DD2 did for sure need a helmet and her numbers were big enough that insurance covered it.  I do know that there are other ways to treat it if her numbers aren't too big.  I would get a second opinion and definitely try physical therapy as well.  We did about 4 sessions to help with positioning.  DD2 did not have Torticolis though so we didn't need a lot of therapy.

  • If your instinct tells you to get a second opinion from another specialist, I would do so.  That way you are really making an informed decision.  It could be that your Ped was jumping the gun a bit, or it could be that the first specialist you contacted is overly cautious in treating the problem.  This way you can put your mind at ease even if you ended up paying for it out of pocket...
