CIO and MOTN

For those using CIO methods for MOTN wakings....do you just let them CIO for those too if you know they aren't hungry or dirty? DD has been waking up around midnight and I know it's out of habit and not sure what to do.

Re: CIO and MOTN

  • I will let my LO cry for about 10 minutes, then I'll go in, soothe, and lay back down. I do that until it works or about 3 times, then if it isn't working, I feed/change/whatever and retry. It tends to work after the second 10 minute cry sesh for me, and if it doesn't, it means there is something she wants.

  • Since the start of sleep training LO wakes up once for a feeding.  The wake times have varied anywhere between 12 and 4.

If it's a habit and you are sure LO is not hungry then I would probably wait them out a bit.  I guess it would also depend on when bedtime is, maybe feed at 12 and let LO CIO at the next wake up. GL!

Are you sure she isn't hungry? Most babies that young still need to eat in the night. I don't know your child but I'm just wondering if you truly know she isn't hungry.

She nurses for about 2 seconds and then goes back to sleep. I am assuming this means she isn't hungry.

I just don't understand how you could successfully sleep train when a baby still needs MOTN feedings. How can YOU determine when she can eat and when she just needs to cry???

For me it's very easy b/c my LO only wakes up once and that's when I feed her. But it would be a lot trickier if LO was waking up multiple times a night. Since I haven't dealt with this I don't have the answers, I was just offering some suggestions based on what the OP said. But I would think that if they only eat for a  min or two and fall asleep then they probably aren't hungry but like I said I have no experience with this.

How old is your LO? CIO advocates/experts do not recommend this until 6 mos

Yea...it depends on what "expert" you ask. I'm not looking for a debate, just experiences. I think you have to do what works for you and your LO and what you are comfortable with.

This is where we are too. We "sleep trained" to get him to be able to go to sleep on his own without a paci, rocking, swaddling. We also let him fuss if he wakes up, and he has now dropped to one feeding per night, usually between 2 and 4. He's hungry, and we give him a light feeding (4 oz). Hopefully at some point, he'll drop this as well, and it will be easier since it's a smaller feeding.

when people say "6 months" I honestly wonder if they have ever picked up the books written by the experts and know this first hand... Or just say 6 months because they see that everyone else's saying it. Ferber is a very well known CIO sleep expert and he wrote that you can start as early as 3-4 months.

I have to agree with this and was actually telling my husband the same thing the other day...

Huh? Have YOU picked up and read the book? It's recommended no earlier than 5 months.

Um, I just read the book and he said 3-4 months. Maybe there's some ambiguity somewhere.

  • We let DS cry it out for 5 minutes, then check on him  - soothe him and get him back to sleep without picking him up. If he wakes again, we wait 10 minutes and then do the same. The third time is 15 minutes (kind of painful, but only happened twice since we started a week and a half ago).

If this is the method you have chosen, then you have to just power through. Good luck!!

Agreed! I just read his book. It does say 3-4 months. I also made sure to go back and re-read the chapters that applied to my situation with my baby the most so that when we implemented the method, we were fully prepared.

  • We were blessed with a wonderful sleeper this time around, so we didn't have to sleep train.  But with DD we did CIO for MOTN wakings as well starting at 6 months when she moved to her own bedroom.
