Good eater to a Bad eater

DD as almost stopped eating her solid food. She plays with it, touches every piece but will not eat it. At any meal right now she may have 3 or 4 bites before she has finished and she completely refuses yogurts and purees. And her formula intake is way up. I feel like this is a huge step backwards! She will eat puffs, toast and blueberries, but I really want to keep her diet well rounded. DD has no teeth yet so I am not sure if teething pain could be the cause. She has no redness or swelling in her gums.

Any ideas how I can get my once good eater back on track? Or is she giving me a taste a of what its like to have a picky toddler?!

Is she teething or sick? I know there can be a dip in appetite during teething or sickness. I think all you can really do is keep offering her the good stuff and I'm sure her appetite will pick back up.

I agree with this. DS will not eat anything warm or even room temperature right now because he is teething. I usually give him some frozen berries or boobie cicles in a mesh feeder and he loves it.

DD has yet to get a tooth, so I am a bit teething clueless... can she be having enough discomfort to limit her eating even if there is no gum swelling and redness?

DS is getting his 5th and 6th teeth and has never had a fever, reddness or swelling. His gums I am assuming are just sore because he only refuses to eat anything warm when he teeths. He also gets super clingy.

Thanks! This is exactly what we have going on. Maybe it is teeth.

  • My older boys both went through ups and downs with eating between 12-24 months. DS3 is following suit. Some of it does have to do with teething pain. It hurts to bite, chew or they are fussy. My pedi always says to look at the whole week and what they eat. Also their tummies are tiny so a few bites might be all they need at that time. My boys always eat more in the mornings and it usually gets less over the day. I also limit the amount of milk they are allowed once they hit 12 months.

Once they hit about 15months in our house, breakfast and lunch I feed them things I know they really like - ham-n-cheese, cheese quesadilla, cheese toast, etc. Dinner is what I plan. They are either try 3 bites at least of each item to get their tiny scoop of ice cream or they get no dessert or other food. It's helped a lot with getting the big boys to eat more foods and have more of a balanced diet.

Wow. You'll need to hang around longer to give us your feeding advice once we start "real food" couple months down the road. I have a hunch that I have a picky eater on my hands and I don't want to become a short order cook catering to what DS is willing to put in his mouth just so he'll eat something.

Thank you for this! It certainly makes be feel a lot better about DD's eating habits right now!

  • Be patient and don't stress.  Weaning is a gradual process with ups and downs.

If you do think you are dealing with pickiness already, I recommend reading the advice and viewpoint of Ellyn Satter:

    https://www.ellynsatter.com/how-to-feed-i-24.html

DS became picky at age 1, and he still is rather picky, but I don't stress about it anymore (usually).

DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
