Swaddle Weening

My DD doesn't seem to want to sleep still in her crib without her swaddler and it getting so hot I don't want to overheat her. Any suggestions on how to get her to sleep without it? Not sure what to do here. I've tried her with one arm out, both out, and don't have a lot of money to spend on other products. A little help please.

Re: Swaddle Weening

  • I tried DS with one arm and it was a huge fail.  Then one night i just put him in his PJ's no swaddle, no sleep sack and put him in his crib.  He went right to sleep.  I am using a cotton sleep sack right now but as it gets hotter I will likely just put him in a diaper shirt.  A bunch of ladies on my BMB went cold turkey like I did and we've had quite a bit of success.  It might take a few nights but maybe she will surprise you like my LO did.

  • I went cold turkey. After 4 nights, she did great. She has been unswaddled for a month now with ease.

  • We also went cold turkey last night.  We tried the one arm in, one arm out, and that just made him mad.  It took him a little while to go to sleep, but when he did, he actually slept a lot better and was able to self soothe himself better. He woke up this morning and happily played in his crib until I went and got him, where as before, he would scream when he woke up in the mornings.  I think it gets to a point, where they don't sleep well in the swaddle because they are too confined and want more freedom to move around. Good luck!

  • We just switched to a sleep sack because he kept kicking out of his swaddle when we moved him to the crib & his feet would get cold. The sleep sack allows him to kick around & still stay warm.  We just put him in a onesie with the sleep sack over it.

  • We went cold turkey at about 10 weeks. She kept breaking out if her swaddle. She did great right away and has slept in fleece Jammie's ever since! Now that its getting warmer we have move to cotton Jammie's and probly will do just a diaper and onsie this summer.

After several bad nights, we decided we had to try something different (we had been using the miracle blanket). We put her in a halo sleep sack, arms out. Haven't looked back. That was about a week ago. She is 5 1/2 months.

ETA: We keep the A/C pretty cool at night - around 68 - 70. I like it cool to sleep. I put her in footed pajamas and the sleep sack and she seems fine. If I was worried about over-heating, I'd probably do a short sleeved onesie under the sleep sack. I remember reading somewhere that babies are generally okay with whatever you need to sleep - so think about what you're wearing and how many sheets/blankets you want to have on you during the night and try to imitate that with their pjs/swaddles/sleep sacks etc. I know people who have swaddled with only a diaper on underneath b/c of heat.

  • We weaned cold turkey for naps and gradually (one arm out, then both, then sleepsack) for nighttime.  When he was done with swaddling, he slept in a Halo SleepSack wearable blanket for naps and during the night.  It really helped with the transition, and also was much safer than a loose blanket and couldn't get kicked off.

  • I am going to try in a couple months, around the time she turns 5 mos.  She just sleeps so good in it.  But I know she would sleep better without it (so she could do the paci herself!)  I've tried one arm out but she lays there flopping her arm around for long time instead of sleeping.  So I don't think that's any better than no swaddle at all.  But I'm going to wait until the 4 month wakeful business is done.
