Speech Delay

It's been awhile since I've been here, but I was wondering if any of your LOs have been dx'd with a speech delay? DS was at his 18m appointment. Still no words now at 20m.

Re: Speech Delay

  • My DS was. The pedi wasn't super concerned, but had us do an EI evaluation just to be on top of things. He had the eval a few weeks ago and they did consider him to have a speech delay. We have two planning meetings this week and then he will probably start speech therapy in the next few weeks or so.

At the moment DS has maybe 3-4 words, but only 1 that he says with any consistancy. His understanding is pretty good. I'm hoping that the speech theray will be the kick start he needs to bring him up to speed.

  • We have a complete developmental evaluation coming up at the end of the month (that I'm both looking forward to and really nervous for).  The only thing remotely resembling a word he has is "Maaa" (which he started doing again on Mother's Day, perfect timing!).  He's recently started signing 'more' and today 'dog' (I slacked off signing with him for ages and recently restarted).  He's mimicking pretty well and seems to understand what we say, just doesn't say it on his own.

  • H has a delay. We have done the evaluation and she qualifies for services. We are waiting to start therapy once a week now. Hopefully she will start in the next couple weeks. They will come to daycare 1 hour a week to work with her.

  • DS doesn't have a speech delay (he has other delays in growth), but I wanted to just give you some encouragement!

I work with PreK kids and just wanted to let you know it's great that you caught this early and are getting your babies speech now! I have spoken with several parents who are concerned with their kids' speech when they enter PreK because they were diagnosed with language/speech delay at 18-24 months. The ones who received speech therapy are usually indiscernible from the other kids in the class and oftentimes more advanced in speech than their peers.

Thank you so much for saying this! And thank you to the others who've chimed in. I've been feeling like the MOTY for this today, like I'm failing him in some way, and hearing that I'm not alone and that facing this now will help so much makes me feel a lot better.

  • My dd has about 5-10 words.  I got her hearing checked last week.  Have the rest of you done this?  I did it at the local childrens hospital and it was easy and insurance covered it.  My dd didn't end up having a hearing issue, but I'm glad to know that's not what is causing the delay.

I'm giving it another month or so and then am going to start speech therapy if she doesn't get several more words. My ds was delayed too and at 3.5 talks non stop.

We had DS's hearing eval last week too, and he passed. I didn't really suspect any hearing issues, but they wanted to rule any hearing issues out before therapy starts.

I haven't had his hearing checked.  I don't suspect an issue as he responds correctly when I speak to him, but I want to get it checked just to make sure.  Pedi wants the full developmental assessment to happen first to rule out other potential issues.  My insurance won't cover it unless pedi approves it, and that's not the order she wants things done in.  Frustrating.
