When to transition to a toddler bed

I am not planning to do so right away my parents said to do it when he could crawl out of his crib and the reading I have done said around 18 months, but DS is getting to the point where he can almost crawl out of his pack and plan I'm worried his crib is next. Has any one had their LO almost ready to crawl out of the crib or had an earlier child they had to transition before 18 months?

DS is also 2.5 and still in his crib.  He is a climber (was climbing up our couch and sitting on the back of it by 1 year), but doesn't try to climb out of his crib.  I can't imagine that a 1 year old would be able to get out of a crib that has a mattress dropped all the way down, they simply aren't tall enough unless there are toys or something else in the crib they can step on.  I'm not even considering taking DS out of his crib until he is 3 (or older.  LOL!).  I will do the same with DD.  She will stay in as long as I can keep her in there safely.

Granted it's a smaller crib since it's at daycare, but there are no toys etc in the crib. This little girl is very good at climbing. She is a monkey. Most normal one year olds are fine. Just wanted to clarify, so no one thought DC was negligent.

Oopps, sorry, I wasn't referring to this situation when I made that comment.  I was think of a "normal" size crib.  :)  My son is quite skilled at climbing too, but he only tried once to climb out of his crib and I was right there.  I quickly told him "no" and he never tried it again.  I was quite surprised actually, since I was sure he would try again but apparently this is the only case where he actually listened to me!

  • We're moving her out once we move which will be in a few months.  We are expecting in December and need the crib for the next LO.
  • DD1 is still in her crib at almost 2.5 years old. We plan on keeping both kids contained as long as possible. Right now they are both content, so I'm not about to mess with a good thing. We'll make the transition once they to the point where they're climbing out regularly.

  • DS1 was in a twin bed at 13.5 months. We needed the crib for DS2 and I didn't want to buy another one for what we thought would be the last child. Also DS1 was huge and was become uncomfortable in the crib. He actually slept better in his twin bed and we've never had issues with him.

DS2 went into a twin bed at 18mths and moved into a room with DS1 at the same time. He did great as well. Never have had issues with either one getting out of bed or not sleeping.

DS3 with transition at 18mths as well and we'll be putting all 3 boys in one room at that point so we can convert the nursery into a playroom/guest room. I don't forsee it being a big deal at all.

PBK is where we got our twin beds. They have a few settings to where you can put the mattress and we have them pretty low to the ground. We put one side up against the wall and other side had an extra long bed rail. Both had the bedrail removed by 2 years old. It's actually awesome when we travel that they can go into a regular bed. Makes life easier.

DD1 was transitioned to a twin bed at 18 months. She never crawled out, but she was a horrible sleeper. We were trying to help her sleep; for her, it worked. One of the babies at DC who is a month older than DD2 can already climb out of her DC crib. She sleeps in a floor bed at nap time. This child was also an early walker; she's been walking since 9 months.

Our old DC actually transitions all babies to cots around 12 months old and they are all on cots by 15 months old. It's amazing what kids will do at daycare. My boys were holding their own bottles by 7months old and drinking from regular cups by 15 months old. I don't know how they did it but I don't forsee ds3 following in their footsteps

2 1/2 to 3. We moved my oldest daughter out at 2 1/2 and I wish we would have waited. She showed no signs of crawling out of her crib and slept so much better in her crib. We had a real struggle with keeping her in her bed once we moved. This is definitely a "milestone" i will not rush! The only reason we moved my first was so that we would be able to use the crib for the baby.

  • Ds's bed turns in a toddler bed then a full size bed. We won't be changing the crib Iinto a toddler bed until he starts trying to crawl out. He sleeps like a log now...8pm to 8am....like clockwork so I don't want to mess up a good thing lol If it ain't broke don't fix it lol
  • We moved dd at 2.5 years because ds needed the crib and she had crawled out once. I would not move them much before then. Personally I feel they are safer not able to roam until they can comprehend better.

  • IMO, life is much easier when baby is in the crib.  I keep them there until they climb out.  DD was close to her 2nd bday when I made the switch.

  • We moved Lu at about 2.5 when she figured out how to crawl out of her crib.  If it's not broken, don't fix it is my motto.

  • I've done right around 2 for both my older kids
