Just got an adjustment and was talking with the chiropractor about adjusting my newborns. He said its very minimal but can make a world of difference. Told me stories of babies he has helped that were colicky an not sleeping. Sounds nice and worth a try. Anyone do this or planning to with newborns? I have twins coming and can only imagine how cramped they are in womb....
Re: Chiropractor for newborns
I will be taking our LO within a few weeks of delivering. (Vaginal) birth can put a lot of stress on a baby's spine and in the event that something is twisted and out of place in his head/neck/spine I'd like it attended to as soon as possible.
For the person who thinks it's dangerous - Infant chiropractic adjustments are closer to an accupressure treatment, they are incredibly gentle and very far from the "back cracking" that people usually associate with adult or even older child adjustments. They typically feel along the spine and apply a small amount of pressure to any locations that might need it. My dr pressed on my arm to show me the amount of force used in an infant adjustment, and I could barely feel it. I do not feel I'm putting my child in danger in ANY way.
I see my chiropractor regularly due to some spinal injuries I received when younger that healed incorrectly. (I had a very bad fall at age 11, slipped on ice and landed flat on my back, and then a car accident in high school caused damage to my neck.) I believe if I'd had intervention done when I was much younger I wouldn't need to go quite as often as I do now. FWIW I saw an orthopedic doctor for my back in high school & college, and they wanted to do surgery to repair the damage to my thorasic & lumbar areas, but I've been able to finally get pain relief and avoid surgery thanks to my excellent chiropractor. I am a firm believer in chiropractic care, the nerves that control every single organ in your body run through your spinal column, having your spine aligned allows every other part of your body to function better. If a few small pressure points can make sure my infant is healthy from the very start, it's well worth it to me.
Yeah, I'm not on board with this. I might take a Toddler, but not a newborn.

I really fought going to the chiropractor. My DH always suggested but instead I went to my primary care for migraines and carpal tunnel. She put me on meds and gave me wrist guards. I was so sensitive to the meds, but to get off then I had to ween my self off slowly. It creeped me out that I was putting that in my body. So, I finally gave in and went to a chiro. I haven't had a migraine in 4 years. It's made me a huge believer in chiropractic care.
But like pp, it some how still makes me nervous for an infant. I never did it with my pervious two. But I am more worried about my twins and how they'll be once born. It feels super squished up in here....
Thanks for the thoughts and input!
Next time you go for yourself, ask them to do an example of the pressure they would use on an infant on your arm. I think you'll be surprised at how gentle it really is.
I'm with you, saw an Ortho for my joint issues and was given lots of prescriptions and suggestions for surgery. I had surgery done on both of my knees and still didn't find that it was enough of an improvement for all of the hassle, pain, and expense, so when they wanted to operate on my back I had to draw the line and look for alternatives. I wish I'd started to see a chiropractor ten years earlier.
Newborns are adjusted VERY differently than adults. The pressure is about the same as what you push on a ripe tomato. We started taking DD1 when she was about 9 months old due to constant ear infections. It helped a lot. We will likely take DD2 with us because our entire family goes. Just make sure you take them to a chiro trained in pediatrics.
Both of our two kids got some care as newborns. My daughter needed a lot more from the fast birth. She was impacted a lot by it, and we saw her calm down and relax through getting the oh-so-gentle adjustments. I really recommend it, and will take our new LO in this fall at least once following the birth, unless some other issues come up and he could benefit from more. I love our chiro - I only go in pregnancy myself or if another family member has an issue that can be worked with.
I referred a friend to ours, and she took her newborn in who had reflux and was very fussy. It took a few adjustments (not just one) but she saw a big improvement.
A month or so ago, I took my 2yo to this chiro that we like (she does pedi and pregnant women), because she had a yellow snotty nose off and on for three months, no other symptoms and no one else got it in our family. It just wasn't going away. Within 24 hours of her adjustment, it was gone and has stayed gone. She felt a lot of congestion and also felt it release as she worked on her. I was very thankful!
We're pretty anti chiros in this house. DH is a physical therapist and has had way too many patients who are now paras or quads from the hands of a chiro.
However, we have several friends who rave of their chiropractic care.
You have to do your own research and go with your gut.
