Where can I get a basic sewing machine for cheap?

I saw a basic Singer at Target for around $80 or $89.  Any place cheaper that you know of?  It doesn't need to be super fancy, but I would at least like a trusted name/good brand.

  • Singer's quality has really gone downhill.  I'd look at a basic Brother or Kenmore, personally.

  • Bernina makes the most reliable modern machine.  OR, you could buy an older machine from a repair shop.  My Singer is from the 60's, and it's the only one I have.  You see how well it runs!

  • I got my Brother off craigslist.
  • i second craigslist. or does anyone you know have one you could borrow till you find out just how much you're going to use it/what features you need? also, joann's has 40% off coupons. i have no idea if they're good on sewing machines, but if they are you could get a better machine for less money that way.
  • Last year, Target had their sewing machines on sale after Thanksgiving. I think the $80 Singer was about $50.
  • I don't know if I'm too late, but I would try to find a used one. I bought a brand new $300 sewing machine a few years ago and rarely sew. My machine is practically brand new.I plan to keep mine and would like to tackle some new projects, but I'm sure there are people just like me who are looking to sell theirs.
  • See...I'm very anti-used sewing machine.  I purchased one used once, and it was HORRIBLE.  Even after having it serviced professionally, the tension and timing were WAY off.  We're talking NIGHTMAREishly off.  Never, ever, ever again do I want a used sewing machine.

I have been told that that Singer's quality has gone downhill.  My sister quilts using a Janome, and has fine results.  I've heard positive comments regarding Kenmore and Brother.  I'm a Pfaff girl, myself.  But, Pfaff isn't the cheap way to go.
