2nd Trimester

I need a root canal :(

Hey girls. So my teeth have been killing the past two nights. I went to the dentist today and they said I need a root canal! I am 15 weeks and petrified! They have me Vicodin and penicillin until I have it done which isn't till June 13! I am so scared I will hurt the baby, but I also want to be able to sleep and not be in such terrible pain!

Re: I need a root canal :(

  • I would definitely check with your OB about the vicodin.  I don't think that is safe but then again I'm not a professional.  As for the root canal, I had one done a while ago and they are not bad at all just uncomfortable.  Best of luck and hope your pain subsides!!
  • I had one done during my first pregnancy.  The dentist absolutely needs to be in contact (as well as you) with your OB!  I'm not sure about the Vicodin either.  My Dr. only let me take plain Tylenol.  The root canal itself was not bad at all.  It was annoying, but not painful.  I did have to make them stop one or two times so I could go to the restroom, but you will be fine.  Ice packs to the face helped me as well.  The antibiotics will ease the pain within a day or two until your appointment.

I've had a ton of dental work done during this pregnancy. The second trimester is the safest time to do it. The risk of a root canal is much safer than having that tooth get infected and pass on the infection through your blood to the baby. It is scary though.

I was premedicated with Norco. My OB reassured me that Norco or vicodin were ok. Some women have to be on them their whole pregnancy for pain management. I would fill your Ob in on what is going on though.

    All of this.

  • I would check with your OB but I am pretty sure you shouldn't take vicodin while pregnant. My doctor says the only pain killer I can take is Tylenol.

  • I'm getting a crown done in about a week.  I've needed it since just a few days before I got my BFP, but they won't do any work (unless it's an emergency) till 2nd tri.  I do know that my dentist is very well versed in what you can have during dental work.  I'd contact your OB for a second opinion if you are unsure.  Also, with my daughter, I had severe back pain to the point of not being able to walk one day and was given a pain medication by my OB.  So I know that it was safe me to to take.  Sometimes the risks of not taking medication outweigh the risks of taking it.  Still doesn't make it easy.

I'm just a bit nervous because I have a history of panic attacks in the dentist chair during long procedures and so they normally give me the gas...which I can't have.  I'm going to be channeling some meditation techniques to get me through it next week.

  • Just had a root canal. Take Tylenol and make sure they double cover you when taking the Xrays. No big deal
  • Thank you everyone! It has been postponed till after my wedding June 23!
  • I had a root canal right before I knew I was pregnant.  I was around 4 weeks pregnant.  Had an appointment for my temporary crown last month and I called the dentist to let them know I was pregnant; that I had just found out.  They required authorization from my OB.  OB didn't hesitate at all in ok'ing it.  Had my temporary crown put on...waiting to go back in a week and a half to have the permanent crown put on.  Fortunately, I never needed pain medication.  However, the doctor note my OB gave me for the dentist said Tylenol #3 or Vicodin for pain.

  • At least you don't have to get it pulled like mine did 3 days ago!! My Dr. OK'd Tylenol3 but for sure check with your OB about meds!! If your in pain and have an infection def get it done, otherwise once you are done with antibiotics the infection will just come back and then antibiotics become less and less potent to attack the infection (which is not good for you or baby) Get it taken care of ASAP and don't put it off.... not something to mess around with, it will just get worse if left and then need to be pulled. Root canals are not that bad at all, it is just a lengthy apt.... so bring music headphones :)
