1 is a hard age, because they definitely are beginning to understand
their wants and needs, but don't have the communication skills yet,
which is very frustrating for them.I tend to look at the cause of the tantrums - is he (I have a son) hungry? upset because I won't let him play with/do something dangerous? clingy? My response tends to address the underlying issue.
Sometimes that's redirection (playing with something I don't want him to), sometimes that's holding him (if I'm able to), and sometimes that's letting him cry about it a little (I usually use this if he wants "up" but I can't hold him. I'll tell him I can't pick him up right now, and I'm sorry if that's upsetting to him. He can cry about it for a little bit, and I'll be right here when he's ready)
