Bedtime routine change?

For a while now, K's bedtime routine has been...Shut the door, turn on the lamp & sound machine, lay on a quilt in the floor for a massage/diaper change/pjs, read a book, nurse & song, bed.

This worked great and he really seemed to enjoy it. If he was already pretty tired, we would skip the book and the massage would get shortened, but we basically kept it the same each night. But the last few nights, he has started crying when I lay him on the quilt and won't stop until I change his diaper real fast, throw on his clothes, and pick him up. Plus, he won't tolerate a book anymore. He wants to just skip straight to nursing.

We started CIO a few nights ago...do you think this is because he is anxious about bedtime now? Should I keep attempting our regular routine each night or should I just cut it down to door, lamp/sound machine, diaper change, pjs, nurse & song, bed? That just makes it super short IMO. Anyone else experience this?

Re: Bedtime routine change?

  • Everything I've read about CIO is always keep the same routine. Routine and consistency is key no matter what for of sleep training you're doing.

  • I wouldn't change what you're doing and keep things the same. I have a similar situation here. DS gets worked up as soon as I say goodnight to him but he settles once I set him in the crib. We're almost two weeks into sleep training. He pretty much just fusses for half a minute, plays with his loveys for a little bit, and then falls asleep.
