AW: 4 Month appointment

So we had our 4 month appointment with my doctor. Hannah is 15lbs 2oz, 25.5 inches long. She is in the 75 percentile! The doctor was very pleased. She also passed all her developmental milestones.

I have one question for you ladies. My doctor mentioned that new information coming out says you don't need to wait till a year anymore for high allergy foods like eggs. Except honey, and my doctor put peanut butter on that list. You BLW moms, you give your babies scrambled eggs? Cuz that would be awesome if I could use that as an intro to foods.

Re: AW: 4 Month appointment

  • I'm more of a lurker, but I'm here some!  I'm also not a BLW mom ... but yes, the new recommendations are to give more allergy prone foods earlier.  Honey isn't due to allergy it is about botulism.

We gave peanut butter at about 11 months because we didn't know we could give it sooner.  Our pedi had told us to hold off on egg until 1, but we did that around 11 months as well.

The studies are now showing that giving them "allergy prone" foods can actually help reduce the amount of allergies.

I'm not sure about eggs as a first food, but it's something that probably could be given a little later but before 1.

When are you starting solids?  4 or 6 months?

  • I think I gave eggs around 8-9 months? I can't totally remember anymore. I also gave peanut butter early but it was an accident. DS totally nabbed some peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I figured I could keep giving it since he didn't react to it. I didn't start foods until after 6 months though.

We did eggs an strawberries around 8 months. We haven't intentionally give nuts, but she has gotten a few here and there. I was avoiding them at first, but now we are just giving whatever we eat.
Great news on the weight! That is so awesome. You have done such a great job. It was a lot of work to get where you are and you should be VERY proud of yourself. Congrats!

  • We aren't doing BLW but I have introduced M to all sorts of foods since 4 months, including PB, nuts, egg, wheat, dairy, shellfish etc.  having said that, I started him on veggies and fruits for the first couple of weeks to make sure he was tolerating food fine.  Then around 5 months I started all these other foods.  I did this because of new studies that suggest starting giving the allergy-prone foods between 4-6 months may reduce actually allergies to those foods.

Regarding eggs specifically, I first introduced eggs in the form of baked goods, such as pancakes and muffins.  After that, M got eggs in the form of frittata.

Great appointment! We gave DS scrambled egg yolks at about 7 months. It wasn't his first food but something we tried early. I guess the whites are the part of the egg that you can be allergic to?? So we did just the yolk.

  • We gave G scrambled eggs around 8 months. He is allergic but thankfully he didn't have a terrible reaction.
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • From what I've read there are 4 different allergens in egg whites. If anything I would give only the yolk. You can easily hard boil it and just give the yolk.

I did wait till about 11 months for the whole egg but the next time around ill do egg yolk sooner.

I believe I got that info off of wholesomebabyfood. com
