venting... am I wrong?!

We got to discussing this afternoon about me making T's baby food when it comes time for him to eat solids and we both agree that we'd rather him to have homemade food VS the crap in jars!

Ok so here is where the issue lies and where the fight began... I said that I needed to get more cups and such for our Baby Bullet so I could make up a months worth of food ahead of time and freeze it so it'd still be convenient but still be healthy and homemade! Then he totally flipped out saying he wants T to have fresh food everyday and how freezing his food kills the nutrition in it and how he can't believe I didn't discuss things with him first!! What?!
I can't find ANY website or recipe that even lists ways of making only 1 serving of a particular homemade baby food only larger recipes where you make it and freeze them in cubes!
Am I doing T a disservice by freezing homemade baby food or is he being unrealistic to expect me to make T's food everyday?!

  • Hm, I fed my kid crap from jars. What exactly do you think goes into baby food?

  • The jarring process requires so much heat that a lot of the nutrients are destroyed plus have an crazy shelf life due to all the added preservatives that we PERSONALLY don't feel is best for our son but it's a personal choice, to each is own!

  • There is absolutely nothing wrong with freezing and it does not affect the nutrients (as long as you are using good quality fresh food to begin with obviously). Unless you want to waste a ton of food, you'll have to freeze it, eat it yourself, or not give your baby variety. For instance, if you are going to cook a butternut squash, that's going to make a ton of baby food that the baby will not be able to eat in a couple days. If you don't want to freeze it then I would suggest baby led weaning over purees.

    Yes, to each his own.

  • Your husband is being dumb and needs to do some research.

First, it's really unrealistic to expect to be able to make the food fresh every day.

Second, freezing actually preserves nutrients so a lot of times frozen vegetables that are flash frozen right after harvest are even more nutrient rich than the fresh stuff thst has possibly been out for days traveling to the grocery store. Heat actually destroys nutrients so when you cook the veggies you are doing more harm than freezing them does.

Your husband needs to look at some homemade baby food websites or look into baby led weaning.

Do you happen to know of any that I can show to him? I tried to explain these things to him but he's kinda being a butt about it, I don't know why he's against T having frozen then thawed homemade baby food when we eat frozen veggies and fruits all the time!!

  • Can we maybe not call it the crap from the jars...... I am planning on feeding her the crap from the jars and I feel like I'm being lazy by not making my own when people call it crap from a jar

If you read through the other comments you can see I also say that it is a personal choice and it's our decision that we PERSONALLY don't want to feed our son jarred baby food but don't condemn anyone for making their own PERSONAL decision to feed their children food they can buy already made! It's just the same as breast vs formula feeding! We personally chose to breastfeed but if your choice was to formula feed that was your decision for your own child! You are still feeding your child and that's the most important thing! Heck, we were both formula fed and ate jarred baby food and are fine but just don't want to give him processed food while we can still control his diet!

  • A lot of organic brands don't have preservatives, you pay a premium, but I think it's worth it.  I also make fresh food for DS.  The only thing I would never feed jarred is meat, I find it creepy.

There is nothing wrong with freezing and storing the food you make.
