Third Trimester

Okay, so I know I'm asking a dumb question, but when exactly does the third trimester start?  Some books that I have say 25 weeks and others say 28.  If the second trimester starts at 13w3d, third should start at 26w6d right?  Also this is my second baby, so I'm ashamed for not knowing the answer.

Im going with 27 weeks. That is in the Middle of the 26-28 weeks guidelines I have seen.

I wanted to know this too. I have just assumed tri means 3 so been saying 3 months before due date sept 5, which puts me at June 5 the start of my 3rd trimester....?? No clue, all books and people tell me something different. I told a women yesterday I have about three months and she said no 4... It's not June yet! Gosh! People r specific!

I can only assume this would be the same for everyone. But this Friday I hit 26w6d and it is exactly 3 months out from my due date. So that is what I am going with for the start of the 3rd tri. EEekkksss! 2 more days, I am excited

The three basic ways to calculate trimesters

There are basically three ways of dividing up a pregnancy into the three trimesters. They are by
Development, Gestation, Conception. They give different dates for when the second trimester begins and for when the third trimester begins. Your health care provider might prefer to use the Development method, while another Midwife or Doctor may use the Gestation method.
I am sure they do that just to confuse pregnant women.

By Development:
This uses actual developmental stages to divide up a pregnancy. From LMP to 12 weeks the embryo develops all the major organs and becomes a fetus. From 12 weeks to 27 weeks the fetus continues developing and reaches viability. From 27 weeks on the fetus finishes development and prepares for delivery. Here the second trimester begins at 12w 0d and the third at 27w 0d.

By Gestation:
With this method you take the 40 weeks of gestation and divide into three equal stages. Here the second trimester begins at 13w 3d and the third at 26w 6d.

By Conception:
This method is where you take the 38 weeks of post conception development, divide by three, into the three equal trimesters. Here the second trimester begins at 14w 5d and the third at 27w 3d.

What is the length of the first, second and third trimesters?
The length of the trimesters is often a source of confusion. The word trimester means 'three months'. Three periods of three months each, gives pregnancy a beginning, a middle and an end period.
These periods match the developmental stages to divide up a pregnancy.
Beginning: From LMP to 12 weeks the embryo develops all the major organs, becomes a fetus, and the placenta takes over control.
Middle: From 12 weeks to 27 weeks the fetus continues developing and reaches viability.
End: From 27 weeks on the fetus finishes development and prepares for delivery.
When does the first trimester end or third trimester begin?
Does it really matter exactly when you are out of the first trimester or start the third trimester? No. When the trimesters start and end depends on who you ask, which book you read or what website you visit. Most health care providers actually talk about your pregnancy in weeks, rather than months or trimesters.

I was just thinking the same thing.  With DS, I felt like time went so slow.  I wish it would slow down now!

Time is flying by.  I feel like I'm already 3rd trimester.  I've been hit with all these really uncomfortable symptoms all of a sudden.  Can't believe how close we are all getting.

Oh my goodness, here I thought that it was still weeks away.. but I suppose that I'm starting the 3rd trimester today! Ahhh!

I'm guessing you have the Pregnancy Day by Day book that I have that said 25 weeks.  I'm going with 26w6 days just because of the math and because I'm not read to say I'm in 3rd tri yet

 However, even with moving to 2nd tri, while mathematically it would be 13w3d, my OB counted 12 weeks as 2nd tri... who knows.  I think it's funny that even some calendars or whatever those wheel things are that they use to determine EDD have my EDD at different dates.

I noticed a poster in the OB's office last week that read 25 weeks starts the 3rd trimester. That sounds early to me but I'll go with it. Either way, we're pretty close to the home stretch already, ladies! This has been the fastest of my pregnancies for sure!

I am going to go with the 26 weeks 6 days theory since that is what I will be tomorrow. I have been feeling third tri like all week. U am going to be all over letting people know I'm almost done and am a grouch with good reason!

I just stick with 27 weeks, since that seems to fall in the middle of everything. Can't believe we are already getting the the 3rd tri!
