Subway???

So my husband was trying to be sweet and brought me a subway sandwich yesterday. I have been avoiding those types of foods since becoming pregnant but for some reason yesterday, I just dove in and ate it. Afterwards, I realized that it was on the "nono" list and began to freak out. I've made myself sick. My dr said to not worry and that chances of listeria are so small but I'm freaking out.

Anyone else ever eat subway?

I have found myself worrying about everything I guess it comes down to worrying about losing her after losing my first. I can't seem to shake te constant feeling that something could be wrong. Please tell me this isn't just me that has these feelings?

Re: Subway???

  • I've eaten a LOT of subway, mmmmm so good. I'm sorry it's hard for you being pgal, but don't stress yourself out either. I think I've calmed the further i've gotten into pregnancy. I was terrified to even push hard for a bm at first because I didn't want to push the LO out.

  • The danger is that you'll get listeria because your immune system is weakened. The odds of you contracting it are still slim though. You're not the only one to have eaten lunch meat during pregnancy.

  • I'm eating it right now for breakfast! And had it for dinner last night.  The risk of listeria is low.  And- there have been many listeria outbreaks in other food (ex:cantaloupe).  My doctor is ok with it, so I don't worry!

  • I eat the crap out of Subway, like, I ate it almost everyday for lunch for about 2 months during second tri. I think you'll be ok. ;)

  • I've had lots of subway and deli meats. You'll be fine! I'm pretty sure I've eaten everything on the 'no no' list at least once.

  • This makes me feel better! Everyone at work scared me about listeria etc. Did you get your sub heated at all or just eat it cold like normal?
  • I eat it weekly.

When I was a FTM I freaked about everything and avoided it. So I understand the fear.

  • Op, I've eaten sushi this pregnancy. I think you'll be ok with subway. Don't freak out. The risks are very low.

And now I'm craving an Italian bmt from subway. Haven't eaten deli meat this pregnancy, but it looks like today will be the day I head there for lunch. Thankfully it's just down the block, lol

Cold. Everytime. I don't believe in toasting my sandwiches. Ha! I don't like it!

  • I've eaten Subway plenty of times this pregnancy, I order it toasted or heat it up before I eat it.  Lunch meat gets a bad rap for the listeria but the majority of recent listeria outbreaks have been with produce (cantaloupe, spinach, lettuce) not deli meat.  I'm also pregnant after losing my first two LOs so I know how difficult it can be to not let your worrying get the best of you. I wouldn't think too much about it and certainly don't let other people's opinions on what you eat make you feel bad!

I remember reading something that subway doesn't recommend pregnant women eat the cold sandwiches, but I eat them on occasion anyway. You're more likely to get listeria from fruit, watermelon and cantaloupe are big ones.

  • I wouldn't worry.  I've had all sorts of deli meats and soft cheeses this pregnancy.  Baby and I are fine.  Hope you feel better, it's crazy how we can psych ourselves out.

  • With my first I was psycho about the "no no" list. This time around Im eating subway(not toasted) weekly and washing it down with a caffeine-filled soda and maybe a soft serve milkshake for dessert. Listeria is rare and as PP said, it can be found in things like cantelope and spinach on occasion as well.

  • I WISH Subway was the worst thing I've eaten this pregnancy! I had a burger from A&W last night. I did end up sick.. but that's still pretty common for me. I usually do get Subway toasted, but I have eaten a few turkey breast sandwiches using deli meat from the grocery store which I didn't toast. I'm not too worried about it though, I definitely eat more "high risk fruit" than that kind of stuff!

  • I eat Subway at least once a week. I do get the sub toasted, but that's just a personal choice. The chance of listeria is very, very low I just happened to draw the line at cold deli meat, for me. I do eat hot dogs (cooked) though so go figure.

  • I have eaten my fair share of deli meat this pregnancy. While there is a still a risk for listeria, I do try to buy natural deli meat that is preservative free like Golden Legacy or Hormel. I think I worry about the nitrates more. How is that for twisted? :)

You will be fine. I also eat an inordinate amount of fresh spinach in my smoothies, so my spinach consumption far outweighs my deli meat consumption.

  • Meh, I eat subs all the time.

  • Back in my 1st trimester I had a sandwich from there almost every day. I craved it like crazy and it was only a mile away. I still grab one every now and then. I have had no problems, but I also ask them to microwave the meat if I get a cold cut.

  • I wouldn't eat there or Jimmie John's. This is also my first pregnancy and I am pretty strict with the food rules (I haven't eaten feta in 6 months and I love feta).

That being said, it is only one time and your risk is low. My pediatric nurse friend said that the starting symptom with Listeria is a fever (if eventually you feel you need to get checked out). I am sure you will be okay though because like everyone said the risk is low.

If it would make you feel any better, you can subscribe to recall food updates from the FDA. I did and it has become a piece of mind for me.

You can still have feta as long as it was made with pasteurized milk. I know the stuff I buy at the grocery store lists pasteurized milk as the ingredient. The blue cheese is the same way.

  • I have eaten subway once a week since becoming pregnant.
