DIY mobile question

I found the cutest DIY mobile on Pinterest, and I've really been wanting to make something for the baby I just wasn't sure what! And I can't crochet, plus great grandma has that covered, but my question is are mobiles that move Better or ones that "stay still"? Could I just get something that plays music to make up for not having a musical mobile?

Re: DIY mobile question

  • I actually just sent ours to church for the rummage sale....we hardly used ours so far with two kids and it wasn't worth the $40 at all. I'm skipping one for our next baby.  That doesn't really answer your question though. Cool

  • I can't tell you what a baby would like better, but I have also decided to make my own mobile.

In order to not miss out on the fun of it playing music and spinning I ordered something called a "mobile music box" that lets you choose the song and also comes with the wind up piece to make whatever you attach to the hook spin. I think I spent $18 with shipping. I found it by googling it.

  • both of your suggestions are good! atleast I know not to spend a ton of money on one now, but I will also look into buying a musical part to make one. thank you for the suggestions!Big Smile
  • I made a mobile for my sisters baby because I couldn't fathom paying those prices. Mine is made from felt and blanket stitched around the edges, it has a cat, lion, chicken, elephant, pig, giraffe, moon, cloud and star, with little stuck on eyes and accents...I'm on mobile so can't post a pic...hubby rigged it up with dowel and fishing line and she hung it above the change table. She blows on it while changing him and he just stares at it. It keeps him stillish and mesmorised. I don't think you need one with music but one that moves will interest them more. It's a personal decision though. Happy shopping or making if your brave/stupid like me...mobile smile...
  • I personally don't think movement is necessary. We didn't even use one for dd1, and just had a little wind chime that I got in Japan for dd2. I think the colors are good enough for them. It gives them something to look at, and strongly contrasting colors and shapes help their eyes gain strength.

I'm going to attempt to make this: https://www.etsy.com/listing/128752287/elephant-nursery-mobile-in-aqua-orange

Because I'm cheap and I refuse to spend $60+ on a mobile.

  • I saw a mobile on amazon. I think it was 15 for Just the body and music box. It moved. You attach what ever you want to it
