Baby Names

Johanna

How do you pronounce Johanna? What do you think of it? Choose a MN (all family): Elaine, Elisabeth, Kris--[any girl name beginning with Kris, like Kristina, Kristin, Kristine, etc], Jul--[see Kris. Julia, Juliet, etc], Lorelei, Madison, Hope, Trisha, Alexandra.

I've heard it like Joe-Anna, Joe-Hanna, and Yo-ahna. I don't like the yo-ahna pronuncuation, and I don't like the spelling Joanna of the Joe-anna pronunciation.

Love Jo-Hahn-Ah pronunciation. I'd pair it with Elizabeth!

  • My daughter is Johanna and we pronounce it as Joe Hannah.

It gets mispronounced A LOT either as Joanna, Yo-Ha-Na, or Jo-Ha-Na.

I personally think Yo-Ha-Na and Jo-Ha-Na are very pretty pronunciations as well... I just prefer the way we say it more!

My husband really wanted to spell it Johannah (with an "h" added at the end) as he thought it would've helped people know how to say her name better. But I like it without the "h" at the end. It's also in a song, Visions of Johanna, by Bob Dylan... said like we say it.

And I also don't really like the name Joanna spelled as Johanna.  For some reason, it really bothers me! LOL.

ETA: My vote is for Johanna Kristine.  Very nice flow!

  • Jo-hannah. It was on our short list for both a fn or a mn with DD, but we didn't end up using it.

I like Johanna Kristine and Johanna Hope.

  • I'd pronounce it Joe Hannah.  It's NMS, but sounds best IMO with Lorelei.
