Almost at weight limit for changing table?

Hi everyone. I'm a FTM, so I frequently need tips when something new comes up. DS has a crib with the attached changing table (very small room; we had to have a tall narrow dresser for him, and condensing the crib/changing table made sense). Well, we just realized that he is quickly approaching the 30 lb weight limit on the attached changing table. (He is 13 months old now, but at his 1 yr appt, he was 32 1/2 in tall and 27lbs12oz). So obviously, we need to detach the changing table. As luck would have it, we're also moving in 2 to 3 months, and his new room is bigger.

Should we look for a separate changing table with a higher weight limit? Or another small, low dresser than we can use as a changing table? Or, if not, what does everyone do instead? (When we're downstairs in the living room, I just change him on the floor. I'm wondering more about after bathtime though. Do you just lay a towel down and get them diapered/lotioned/pajamed on the floor of the bedroom?) Just looking to see what other moms do/have done. Thanks!

Until diaper changing became like a WWE wrestling match with DS, we had a changing pad on top of his dresser.  We now always change DS on the floor.  While we still have diaper changing battles with him, we no longer have the fear of him throwing himself off the dresser.  I just use a flat changing pad on the floor (like what comes with your diaper bag) and after his bath, I lie him down on that with his towel and just change his diaper with his towel behind him.  We also put on his lotion and change his clothes/jammies on the floor or while he's standing up.

  • I would just use the floor.  After her bath I dry DD off, lay her down on her towel on the floor in the bathroom (on top of a small rug) and put her diaper on.  We do use her changing table upstairs, but she's less than 20lbs.  Downstairs (where we spend most of our time) we just change her on the floor.

I use the quilt that came with the crib set on the floor, since birth.  I can't deal with changing tables.

  • I think I stopped using a changing table when DD was like 2 months old!

I just find the floor to be so much easier.  Downstairs we have a changing pad on the floor.   After we give DD a bath upstairs, I simply put a towel on the floor in her room and change her on the floor.

  • Thanks so much, everyone! I was leaning towards not buying anything else, but I didn't know if someone had an amazing idea that I just wasn't aware of! DS definitely stands/walks (in fact, he really runs now- haha!), and yes, diapering has become a two-adult job when he's on the changing table! So I'm relieved to know that everybody else likes the floor better too! Now, if I can just get the hang of diapering him while he stands, I'll be much better off!

  • I just use the floor. We've never had a changing table except for the first couple of weeks when we used the flimsy one attached to the PnP. We have always either put a towel down on the bed or on the floor.

  • I use the floor but my dh uses the table due to back problems. If you do want to keep using it you may have longer than you think. Weight gain slows way down in the second year so he may not hit 30lb for a while. And even if he does I would probably just use it until he was like 3233 at least which should take a lot longer

We use a twin-sized bed that is in his room.  (It's not his sleep bed.  He sleeps in the crib.)  I find it more comfortable for him and me to do his changes on that than on the floor.  We have not used the changing table since he was like two months.

We never had changing tables.  When he was really little, I used a changing pad attached to the dresser.  I've been changing and lotioning/dressing on my bed since little brother was just a couple months old.  I had two bums to change before big brother was potty trained, so they would seriously lay side by side on my bed and hold hands while I changed one and then the other.  Floor hurts my back too much.
