Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Recommend your potty.

DS is 14 months and I need to get a potty for him!  Obviously I know he won't be really using it, but I want to get one to have around so that he knows what it is and is used to seeing it.

He did poop on the toilet the other week but it was luck, I caught him at just the right time!  But that got me thinking that I want him to know what the toilet it.

So what kind of potty do you have?  What do you recommend??  There are so many options; little potties, seats for our toilets, etc, and I have no clue what is best.  We don't have a ton of space in 'his' bathroom (our hall bath), so I am thinking a seat for the big toilet would be best?

Advice please!!!!!!

Re: Recommend your potty.

  • I started with a little potty from ikea. It is pretty small, so it fits in our bathroom. [ikea has one for 5 dollars and another for 10] I would start with a little potty because the big toilet is pretty intimidating and a little harder to use at first.

  • I picked up a Fisher Price potty that transitions for the big toilet also. We picked it up about a month ago and LO loves to sit on it and copy me. I have him sit on it when i go potty. I am trying to have him sit on it more. right now, its more of just something fun for him to sit on and balance getting up and down from it. I liked this one, becuase it has a removable toilet seat that can be used on our toilet.

  • I got the Safety 1st from Walmart.  It was $10 and is a little potty, then the seat snaps on to the big toilet seat and the base becomes a step stool.  She loves to sit on it.

I prefer the ones that sit on the regular toilet, as does LO because he likes doing things just like us which means same toilet as us. I have 2 different ones, both which are fine so far [just getting started]. With a boy, definitely compare splash guards as some are much better than others in terms of both doing its job and being comfortable. I also prefer the nonpadded seat. My cousin had a padded one, and as it got used [just for one kid], it cracked along the edges. It wasn't where the LO's butt was, so it wasn't uncomfortable, but it made it not very cleanable, at least not completely.

My DD has been using the same padded one (it has Elmo on it from Target) for almost two years and it hasn't cracked.

I'm thinking about getting this https://www.amazon.com/Mayfair-83EC-000-NextStep-Lift-Off/dp/B00596IFBG/ref=pd_cp_ba_1 so the potty seat doesn't get played with and is easier to clean. It also looks better to guests, I think. More "official".

  • We have the fisher price froggy potty and we love it!  I think it was $12 or so.  I was going to just get one that fit on the toilet as well but heard that it is more difficult to use when they are just learning because their feet don't touch the floor to they don't have as much leverage.  Just something to think about!

we had a bjorn potty DS1 was never interested in actually going potty on it, he wanted to be on the big potty. So we got the Mayfair one linked above I love it now he is so good he just balances over the big seat and doesnt put the little one down anymore.
