Party and Nap coordinating

I'm planning DS 1st bday party, and we don't have many people with kids coming. But those that have kids are close to us and we want to make sure they can come. The kids coming are 2 years old and 3 years old and I have no idea what a typical nap time at that age is. I'm thinking a start time for the party either 1pm, 2pm, or 3pm. What does Parenting think would be best?

Thanks!

ETA: also trying to decide between a Saturday or Sunday.

Re: Party and Nap coordinating

  • Typical nap time for my 2 year old is right after lunch so about 1230 to 230.  Her friends are about 3 and they all nap at about 1 or 2.  Honestly the best time for toddler activities is in the morning or late afternoon (after 3)

I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • DS is 2.5 and his nap time is around 2:00 but he's at a point now where naps aren't sacred (except during the week when I'm alone with him all day, lol) so we'd probably skip it for a birthday party. My personal preference would probably be to go to a party at 1:00 before he gets too tired and get home earlier.

  • My son will be 3 in September and naps 1:30-4:30/5 on the weekends and on school days 12:45-3/3:30.  I'd pick 3 pm, most parents if they want to come can coordinate and put their child down for an earlier nap or show up a little late for the party.

  • Most 3 year olds I know go down for nap sometime between 12 and 2 in the afternoon. I like DS1 to go down around 1 or 1:30 and he usually sleeps for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. We could make a 3:00 party if I got him to sleep a bit earlier. 3:30 would be even better.

  • If they nap, it will be in the afternoon around 1ish, so a late afternoon start time is the best.  I'd say 3:30 or 4.

My favorite party time, as a hostess and guest, is Saturday from 4 to 6pm. Kids can get their regular naps and everyone can enjoy the party. Nothing is worse than a noon or 1pm party. That is prime napping time.

Mine naps after lunch typically around 1pm. I'd pick a 3 pm start time.
  • I've had great success for a few years with 4:30 PM party times. However, then people will expect a meal (we serve dinner). I'm not sure if that is what you want. But the time has worked out really well, with my kids' naps and all of the other kids' naps. Plenty of time for them to get in a full nap and get to our house without feeling rushed.

  • My kid goes down for a nap at noon, falls asleep around 1, and wakes around 3. Even making a 3:00 party, I usually have to wake him up. I like morning parties much better. :-) For an afternoon party, though, I'd do at least 2 or 3.

  • DS naps after lunch, usually around 1pm. I would pick the 3pm time slot.

No advice on the toddler age naps but my son is turning 1 soon and we set the party time at 25pm. We're laid back so I told everyone to come and go during that window. So I'd set the time frame and then let those people know they can come a little later or leave early if need be to get naps in.

I prefer the 3/4 pm invites, however we've been to birthday parties from 11-2 and then I just put him down for a later nap 2-4ish.

I would like 11-2 best since that's when DS is at his most active and in the best mood, with 4-6 the second choice even though that means you should serve dinner. Unfortunately, kids this age are all over the place. Some still nap early at noon, others nap later at 2:00. Some don't nap at all or can easily skip and some are still beastly if they don't get a nap. I would say just do what works best for you and your LO, or if you want, call the guests and ask what the nap times are for their kids like PP suggested.

  • I would think kids nap after lunch so a 3pm party would be best. My kids stopped napping around age 2 though so WTF do I know. lol

  • Late morning or late afternoon is the best time for party as 12-3 is naptime for most 2 and 3 y/o's. We did DD's 2nd and 3rd birthday party at 4pm.
