not sleeping in bassinet

Any tips on how to get my DD who will be 3 weeks tomorrow to sleep in her bassinet? I EBF she only wants me especially at night because she cluster feeds nurses for comfort.
Whenever I lay her in her mini arms reach cosleeper she wiggles everywhere then starts screaming. She hates being swaddled, she spits out the paci, I tried putting blankets under the mattress to make it elevated. I even have an extra pad in the bassinet because the original one was like cardboard.
She will only sleep on my chest. I want her to be able to sleep in her bassinet. Anyone else have this issue or been through it?

Re: not sleeping in bassinet

  • You may try heating it with a heating pad before you put her in it. I found that that helped ease the transition for my little guy.

  • LO would only sleep in a RnP that small. I had a bassinet and he hated it. I do think the warmer wouldnt be a bad idea.

How long until yout LO started to sleep in the bassinet? I do have a RP that she does sleep in during the day for naps.

  • I went through the same thing, only my LO is now 8 weeks and has never slept in the bassinet, not once.  She will however sleep in the bassinet attachment on the PnP, and also in the RnP.  I believe because they both are on an incline.  But that took work, in the beginning she would only sleep on me.  She also won't take a paci and didn't care for swaddling.   So I would wrap her in a blanket (simulating swaddling but not as tight and with her arms out) and let her fall asleep on me.  Then I would transition her to the Pnp or RnP without unwrapping her.  She didn't sense the loss of body heat as much that way, which is what I think triggered her to wake up.
  • We also have had this problem since day 1. I don't think my baby likes sleeping flat on his back. He will only ever sleep in his swing, bouncer, car seat, on my chest or in bed with me with his head laying on my arm so he's elevated.

He's been sleeping in his bouncer, next to my bed. It has been working great. Whatever works as long as its safe! It's important for us to get sleep too!

Some LOs hate the bassinet. Yours might be one of them. DD hated her crib from the get go. You might try a warm water bottle while you do a routine.

Are you swaddling tight enough? Babies that usually "hate" swaddled are usually not feeling secure enough. Don't be afraid to wrap her up tight. Try different pacifiers. DD loved medela brand because they are shaped more like a nipple. Then we moved on to advent.

Try white noise. DD loved the rain or ocean sounds from her sleep sheep. You can do a CD on loop continuous play! that plays all night if you need to. That's what we did.

Check temperature in the room. Could be that the change wakes her up.

Also, some LO prefer human arms. DD required to sleep being held by someone the first month. It was just how it was. You do what you have to do. Good luck.

  • My DD also refused to sleep in anything but the Rock N Play...took us a few nights to figure it out and she's been sleeping great ever since. I usually try to get her into a deep sleep before I lay her down and then she'll usually sleep for about 6 hours straight.

  • I have the same bassinet and had the same problem- She would not sleep in it! She also hated being swaddled. Sooo... we ended up getting a snuggle nest- its in bed with us and she sleeps great! It has sides all around it so she feels more cuddled and she knows were next to her. It was totally worth the $63!  And to be honest- I sleep better too! :)
