anyone else still with the swing?

So I'm struggling with the fact that LO sleeps in her swing mostly for her naps, I'm trying to work on getting her in her crib. She goes down for a few minutes but then wakes up and screams holy terror. DH and I have kept her in bed w us until she can roll over in her sleep because of some choking issues that's is genetic. But occasionally she will sleep in her crib at night for 5 or more hours. But nap time is more difficult, not sure if its because there's too much light or what. She loves her crib with her projector mobile and her lullaby CD, and loves reading in her nursery. Just not sure how to make the transition to her crib during the day smoother for her. Any thoughts? I could use any feedback. Thanks ladies

  • I wish I knew! DD won't nap unless she's got a boob in her mouth or she's in the Ergo. GL!

I don't know if it will help or not, but I've referenced this site for lots of sleep advice: www.troublesometots.com :

  • Eek, I have been freaking out about what's going to happen when dd is too heavy for her swing.  She now has a daily afternoon nap in her swing for 4 hours and whenever I try and put her down in her crib for that one afternoon nap she refuses to settle and go to sleep. At night she sleeps fine in her crib, usually 10 hours, and she'll take a morning nap or two in her crib everyday.  It's just that one nap that is giving us trouble! Lol!

DS#2 still naps in his swing.  I've tried putting him down in his crib for naps but it just doesn't work.  He sleeps beautifully in his crib at night, not so much during the day (and yes, we have black out curtains).

DS#1 was the same way though.  Eventually he just decided on his own to nap in his crib.  I'd say that once he hit about 4/5 months I just kept trying once or twice a week.  If it didn't work, I'd just put him in his swing and not try to force it.  It was right around 6/7 months that he transitioned into the crib full time for naps.  Right about the time he outgrew the swing.

My biggest parenting motto is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!  Never have I heard of an 18 year old needing a paci or a swing to sleep, they will grow out of it!

  • Is there a specific reason why you don't want her to nap in the swing anymore?  If not, I wouldn't worry about it and just go with what works until it doesn't.  IMO it doesn't matter where a baby sleeps as long as they're sleeping well and it's safe.  I think people put far too much emphasis on crib sleeping, especially early on.

  • If you are thinking that the light has something to do with it, have you considered black-out curtains?

  • DS still naps in the swing - we have tried the crib for naps with some success but his napping patterns have started to change (from cat naps to real, hour long naps a few times a day!) and since he has no problem sleeping in his crib at night I see no reason to change what we do right now.

Same here. And now that he's teething and cranky during nursing, he pretty doesn't sleep unless he's in the car, or until night when he'll finally let nursing drift him off to sleep.

  • I usually agree with sbevmc and others with the 'just do what works right now', and I still do in this situation, but here is my experience from basically being forced out of the naps in swing since he out grew it (yayyyyyy 99th percentile in everything, thanks super tall grandpa)

we were basically had to go flat for naps cold turkey... and it was pretty much zero naps for 2-3 days.  We started out the first two weeks with the pnp (I only realized after we got it set up upstairs that he was actually over the weight limit for the bassinet, but we used it anyways for a couple weeks), but with the pnp, I could prop up one side just like 1-2 inches (stuffed a tote bag under the pad).  They also make wedges to put under crib sheets (where I got the idea).  I think this incline may have helped, because he finally gave in to a short nap a few times.  It also helped that he's a rolling machine, and I just decided to start putting him down on his side, and gently holding him down in a comforting way - basically one arm patting his back, the other hugging his arms in front, basically trying to recreate the snug-ness of being cradled in my arms for a few moments.  We also have a sound machine going.

Anyway, this is just how I have figured out how to get him to stay asleep on a flat surface, transition to the crib (without an incline) was pretty easy after that.  We are still working on falling asleep on his own.  He did it so well in the swing, but absolutely wide awake if laid down in the crib or pnp awake.

With the swing put away, we now pull out the stroller for 'emergency' sleep needs, like when he cut his second tooth last week.
