Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Hello!

Just wondering if anyone has advice but my son has been especially bad this week in the way of tantrums/crying. He is 17 months and has no obvious illness or pain other than possible teething. He has been eating a little less this week as well. He did use some new words the other day so could it be developmental?

He will just loose it over small things like his sippy is empty so he then will throw his cup and himself on the floor and scream. If I leave the room he throws himself on the floor too. If I walk away but am still in sight he'll freak out too. Daycare reports that he is always happy and had a great week. But It's a different story at home.

It seems the more I try to redirect, ignore, or tell him "I'll be right back" the worse the tantrum becomes.

I've read Dr. Karp's Happiest Toddler but those techniques have not worked in the past, his tantrum would only escalate.

Not sure if I'm dealing with boredom, separation anxiety, a spoiled child, or a regular toddler as I have had little experience with children before he came along!  Please tell me this will pass LOL!

 TIA!!!

  • Ds did the same thing a few months ago. He threw a 30 minute tantrum one day! It lasted about a week, and I think it was related to a developmental leap.

  • Tasks sounds like normal toddler behavior. I am by far an expert, bc I only have one who is 16 moths, but that's what it sounds like to me, from experience. You should look up the website wonder weeks.com. I bought the book. It goes through all the developmental growth spurts they have and what they look like so. You can know what to expect. I have the same issue with diff behavior at home than at the sitter too. Most if the time it is bc he is tired and its the evening when he has played all day with his friends. Toddlers just throw tantrums for random stuff too. Like sippy cups being empty and other goofy stuff. Don't worry! ;)

  • My 20 month old will throw herself backwards and scream, sometimes over nothing. Usually she wants to "go", but she doesn't really know where. I just wait it out, or ask her why she's so upset. Letting it pass seems to work best though. I think it's an attention thing for her, as I have a 32 month old too, so I know she gets jealous of things she can't do yet that sissy can.

  • My 21 month old has started doing that too.  He threw a 20 minute tantrum because he didn't want to sit in his booster chair.  Sometimes I just let him go.  Some days are better, but he still had his fits.  I just assume it's a phase.  Good luck!
