When to switch nipple size?

DD is 8 weeks on Memorial Day and we have just switched to EFF this week after transitioning from BF over the course of 3 weeks.  We've been using Dr Browns bottles and have used size 1 nipples from the beginning but I'm wondering when I'm supposed to switch to size 2?  Will DD give signs or do I just make the change at a certain age?  She's currently eating 3-5 oz every 3 or so hours if that makes a difference.

Re: When to switch nipple size?

  • If she is collapsing the nipple when sucking, that is a sign to switch. You can also just try the next size up and as kong as she doesn't choke or gulp lost of air while drinking, you should be fine. A lot of babies who are used to nursing stick with a slow flow.

  • My 14 month old still uses a preemie nipple. I never switched, even when we transitioned to formula or WCM.
  • My 9 week old still uses the preemie nipples. The LC said to stick with those until they start to get frustrated with the flow (coming out too slowly), then switch up a size. I also BF, so I want the slower flow.
