switching to formula?

Hi ladies, I'm sure this is a stupid question, but DS#1 never got formula so I'm not sure. I've been EPing for DS#2, and it's taking it's toll. I was doing ok with it, but I discovered DS will not take frozen milk. I have 1000oz, yes one thousand frozen. That is like 2 months worth of milk he won't eat. I feel so defeated. I'm thinking of switching to formula. I was ok with EPing because I thought I could stop at 6-7 months and have enough until he was 1, now it looks like I will have to pump longer, or start scalding my milk. I already feel like I spend so much time pumping, cleaning my stuff, I don't want to spend more time away from my boys scalding the milk too.

I'm taking a few days to think about it, but I think I'm going to switch to formula. How do I know where to start? Just pick one and give it to him, see if he takes it? I have samples of enfamil newborn, similac and simiac sensitive. Try one of those?

TIA, sorry for the ramble, I'm just a little upset at the moment about my stash.

Re: switching to formula?

  • Will he take it if you mix the BM and formula together?

I don't have any advice, but you should look into donating the pumped breast milk.  There are organizations that will take it and give it to moms who can't provide their own breast milk for medical reasons.

this?  I supplemented with formula from 4 weeks until 7 and we just went formula full time.  I wasn't getting anything pumping which made me doubt my supply was strong enough for DD.  we use Gerber Good Start currently and DD has no problems with it.  Sorry about your stash.  If LO won't take it mixed with formula you could always try donating it so you don't feel like its such a waste.

We switched to EFF at two weeks and had been supplementing all along. We started out with Similac Advance, that's what the hospital used with him so we kept that up. He did really well until about two weeks ago. He started getting hard to feed, fighting the whole time, so we switched to Sensitive and he's been a lot better. I think a lot of it is trial and error.

This. I did this with DS1 all the time. Just so maybe your stash doesn't have to go to total waste. If not, then consider donating. GL.

  • I am in a similar situation with pumping and feeling like it is getting to be too much work. We have been supplementing with Earth's Best sensitive since week two and our daughter seems to be doing great on it! I am a big fan of the fact that it is an organic formula. That's why I tried it first. Personal decision which formula to use I think, and for me this one made sense!

It seems like you are pumping WAY too much. Have you thought about cutting way back on the amount you pump? Just pump how much he is eating. As for the frozen stash start making thing with it. Pancakes, muffins, mac& cheese. Anything that requires milk or water. I threw out over 1000 oz as well even after making tons of food with it.    :(
