Warm water, soft cloth. After bath time is best because it will be loosened and likely moved to the outer ear. If you use qtips it only takes one wiggle to cause damage to their tympanic membrane. The ENT that does call at our ER says nothing smaller than an elbow should be in your ear
I just swipe the wax ball out with my pinkie without sticking anything in the canal itself, since they ball up near the entrance. I only use moist cloths for cleaning the outermost portion of the ear. In most cases canal wax will work itself out.
Besides perforated eardrums, Qtips can compact earwax deep inside the ear and decrease hearing over time, at which point you need to get ear flushing done by medical professionals.
I agree, the baby safety Q-Tips are amazing, they can only go in the ear a short distance, no where close to the ear drum.
I use these as well.
However, I try and wait til she is more calm, usually after bathtime, and I use it to clean around the outer most part of her ear hole. Not so much the inside. I'd never forgive myself if I hurt her. I prefer the baby ones because atleast if she does suddenly decide to squirm I'm not stabbing her eardrum.
You should never use Q-Tips in a baby's ears. You could do some major damage very easily.
I use a warm washcloth while I'm bathing him...works like a charm
Fact: If you read a Q-Tip package in it's entirety, it never mentions once using them for ears.
They are talking about the safety ones that are really fat, much bigger than a normal Qtip. I've used them and they work well for me. They're too fat to get down towards the ear drum, but I'm careful with them anyhow.
if its wax I can see, I use my finger. and during every bath I use a wash cloth. I've had a box of those safety baby qtips. I've always been to scared to use them but I gave them a shot last night. Not sure how I feel about them, they don't seem like they go very far past the outer part of the ear but I really don't know how deep these lil ones ears are. so i might just stick to a wash cloth.

If wax build up is an issue put a drop or two of olive oil in each ear at night - only a few nights a week. Our paediatrician suggested this and it helps loosen up the wax. My daughter''s earwax cleared up in a few days

I've had someone tell me their doctor told them this helps soothe ear infections too. They tried it and swear by it.
Re: Baby ears
No. No effing way...Like another PP said, you could easily damage your LO's eardrums!
They make those ear wax sucker things...I don't have one, so I don't know how well they work, but my former pediatrician recommended them.
Really? Never heard of that and everyone I know uses them on their kids.

After I towel dry her I use a little part of the towel that's not totally dry and wipe out her ears.
In regards to the baby Qtips, I do use those for the folds of the kids ears (not the canal though).
