Can't get comfortable...

Mobile: Can't get comfortable...

Did any of your LO's have a hard time getting comfortable in your arms after a while? My DS is almost 5 months and lately when I rock him, he wiggles, squirms, grabs my hair, butts his head, etc.  I used to rock him to sleep but now he just can't get settled in my arms. I would just put him in the crib but he screams his head off still if he's not asleep when I put him down.

It's like he wants his own space to stretch out and get comfortable but he's not quite there yet with putting himself to sleep. Anyone else? Suggestions?

Re: Can't get comfortable...

  • Yup, R went through the same thing.  I think about that time was when I started feeding him to sleep... I will warn you though like every sleep book says not to do this because it's creating a bad habit.  I just can't stand hearing him cry so it was the best option for us.  He's 8 months old now and as long as he's sleepy when I do it, it still works.  I feed him to sleep then put him down.

  • DD does this same thing sometimes. DH will usually snuggle her into a blanket (and by extension, pinning her arms), so that she can't thrash around and keep fussing with herself. If she's tired, she'll calm down and fall asleep, most times.

  • We went through the same thing with DS and it's when we started putting him to bed awake.  I would do his normal bedtime routine, read him a story, and rock him until he was just to squirmy to hold on to.  He would fuss/cry for a few mins before ultimately figuring out how to self soothe and he'd fall right to sleep.  Now I can put him in the crib wide awake and he will put himself to sleep every night.

  • Yep, DD does that sometimes.  When she is overtired, she will constantly rub her face and that wakes her up, she cries, cue us going to her to help her settle down. I sometimes have to pin her arms down so they don't whack her face until she quiets and falls asleep. Other times she seems mad and doesn't want to be rocked to sleep by thrashing her legs, but she's not ready to go down drowsy.

  • DD started doing this, and what I did was to put her down in the crib and kind of pin her legs and arms on the bed. Not in a forceful way, just similar to a swaddle. I don't swaddle her because she rolls already, not in her sleep but it still makes me nervous. Anyway while I do that I put the sound machine that came with her PnP on the babbling brook noise and shh her. I make sure not to make eye contact while doing this so I don't stimulate her. She'll fuss for maybe a couple minutes, but I'm right there to comfort her. When she calms I'll walk away, then she'll usually start fussing again so I'll do the same thing. I also rub her little hand while holding them down. I've only had to go back twice at most and hasn't taken longer than 10 minutes to do. Until we started this the past week or so I was nursing her to sleep and not able to put her down until she was completely out which took up to two hours sometimes. Out was really weighing on me. Now if she wakes and I know she's not yet hungry I don't pick her up I turn the sound machine back on and do the same thing. But she has pretty much been going to bed about 7:30, waking at 3:30 to nurse then back to bed until about 6:30, 7am. Sorry for the novel, but I hope it helps and you can get some piece of mind as I have recently.

  • Yes, us too. But DD is fine most of the time once I lay her down. And we both usually get hot after a few minutes too lol.

This is what I've learned to do with Jackson. Plus he needs his blankie to go to sleep. It works wonders
