Paper Plates

I'm sick. I'm bored. I have a sleeping baby so I'm ripping off a thread I saw on another site.

How often do you use paper plates? I was shocked at the amount of people that said they use them daily. We pretty much just use them for camping and parties. I make enough trash without adding plates to the pile.

Re: Paper Plates

  • Camping and parties only.

  • When we pick them up for a party or something, we will continue using them until gone.

Same here.  And I'm glad you posted this because I totally forgot to put paper plates on the list for our race party on Sunday.

  • We used to use them daily (along with plastic utensils & cups) then we decided to stop buying them to save money. That lasted a few months. Now about every 3 weeks or so we get tired of the constant pile of dishes and buy a pack and use them til they're gone.

  • I use them for snacks and stuff sometimes but not daily. DH uses them more than I do because he's lazy about washing dishes.

  • I'm sorry you're sick, friend!

We only buy them for parties, and then we mainly use the extras for picnics.

  • Almost never.  Just for parties and for craft/paint holding.

I'm confused as to why people would use them more often than that.

Never. We have reusable plastic plates we use for camping and get togethers.

Fewer dishes. Some of us are lazy.

  • Camping and parties. I have used them during a move as well so that I can pack and unpack my dishes, but never for everday use.

  • We use them for parties but then we also use them here and there depending what's on the menu.  Smokies and potato salad = paper plates.  Steak and potatoes = real plates.
  • Never but we have a small extended family, so we use our real plates when everyone gets together. We don't have outdoor space, so we don't bbq, either.
  • Only when I don't have enough real plates for everyone, so just parties. Oh and play dates Bc kids and breakables are always a bad idea.

For some reason I bought a Costco size package of paper plates. 2 years later, we're still working our way through it.

    This.

Though my neighbor uses ONLY paper plates, cups, and disposable silverware unless his dad is coming over. Then he uses the 3 plates, bowls and cups he owns.

  • Not that often, but when we do use them they go in the compost.  So, I'm lazy but in the most environmentally friendly way possible.  lol
  • Camping, parties, right after I had a baby.

    And when we are sick.

  • Mostly for cookouts. But I have been known to use them for casual family dinners like grilled cheese and salad. Or,if the dishwasher is full and I don't want to wash them by hand. I hate washing dishes.

  • I buy theme dessert plates for the kids' birthday parties for apps and cake. We use regular plates for meals at gatherings.

I had no idea some people used paper plates every day. I can't wrap my head around it.

I gave up on the post I jacked this from on page 26. It's a very hot button topic.

  • Once or twice for parties. We don't even use the leftovers after the parties.  They just sit around for the next party.

There's a 26 page thread about paper plates? If they just ate pouches, there would be no need for plates at all. Where can I find this lovely gem?

Even camping.  I mean, who wants to haul around enough paper plates, cups & utensils for a week? Very not packing or portage friendly.

Large backyard bbq or kids party, yeah but otherwise....NO.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Daily. The guys don't use our regular plates. I have no idea why. It's always been that way. DH days they had two sets of played at one time, but they broke it. So they use paper now. Occasionally I will use it for small things that I don't want to dirty a dish for. However, I then feel bad afterwards. I have tried so hard to cut the waste down in this house.

Is doing dishes really THAT big of a deal?

I can't quite wrap my head around the waste - both in terms of garbage and money spent - but I guess it's your money to throw in the trash.

I can't wrap my brain around this either. It seems akin to throwing away your underwear and buying new ones every time instead of washing them. I feel like washing dishes, like laundry and a host of other chores, is just a part of life...

This makes me feel much better about what I thought was my excessive paper towel use, though.
