Ciprodex...?

Anyone used or heard of this? I apparently have an outer ear infection. I went to the regular doc and he prescribed these ear drops (Ciprodex), 4 drops twice a day for seven days. He and the pharmacist were both very insistent that I talk to my OB (duh) before I take it just in case. They both said there should be nothing to worry about since I am not ingesting it but DO NOT take it more than 7 days and please call my OB. So, obviously I will call the OB but her office is closed for lunch so I was just curious if anyone had ever taken it during pregnancy before.

Re: Ciprodex...?

  • Just because a medication is topical doesn't mean it doesn't enter your bloodstream and potentially affect the fetus.  This one is a powerful/broad-spectrum antibiotic.  That's as much as i know about it... but i would probably ask if there is a less concerning antibiotic you could start with (I would actually do this if i weren't pregnant to avoid overuse of strong antibiotics).

  • Ciprodex is a pregnancy Cat C. antibiotic. Cat C is catergorized because it is unknown of the effects to fetus. It is always best to check with OB to be sure it is ok to take with any Cat. C medication. I hope this helps, and good luck with your ear infection.
  • When I was in labor with my son I had an ear infection. They wouldn't let me have that until after he was born. I think it's a good idea to double check just in case. Hope you feel better.
