Symphysis Pubic Dysfunction

I had my appointment this morning and my ob said that I most likely have Symphysis Pubic Dysfunction. Apparently it's common with subsequent pregnancies and it very painful. Additionally he thinks I may have a form called diastatis symphysis pubis as I have been having severe pelvic pain and pain in my rear end that I thought was sciatica. He said that a support belt could help a little bit but other than that there isn't much I can do about it. Thankfully my son is head down as I was concerned that he moved and that was causing the awful pain. This is going to be a very long 5 and possibly 6 or 7 weeks if this baby takes after his brother and decides to come fashionably late. Has anybody had this and have any remedies that have helped with the pain?

  • Sorry you're dealing with that... I've had that pain since November from the relaxin hormone and now its way worse since LO is so big... I have found that tylenol helps a little and also if you're able, taking a day to relax in bed helps me also... Hope you get.some relief

I have had it with both pregnancies and it is very painful.  The maternity belt did not help me.  If you google, you can find some exercises that may help some. Ice can also be your friend.    I was in physical therapy 3 days a week with my first pregnancy.  This time around I am trying to tough it out because I can't miss work like that for doctor's appointments.

  • I have had it with both pregnancies.  A support belt helps a bit.  I ended up in physical therapy for a couple of month after my first son's birth because mine was so bad and I was in so much pain.  Physical therapy REALLY helped.

  • I had this really bad at the end of 2nd tri/beginning 3rd. What I have found to be really helpful (but was difficult at first) is taking walks every day for about 20-30 min, at the fastest pace I feel like I can go. The dogs really help out with that.

Also I have been doing squats randomly throughout the day, whenever I need to pick anything up off the floor.

I'm pretty sure I've had that pain for two months now :. I brought it up to my dr but she says its just the pressure applied to my pelvis to try and make room for baby. Either way its awful, I'm really hoping it disappears after birth!
  • I had this pain probably around the end of 2nd tri/early 3rd tri. My OB said support belt. I went to my chiro, and had my pubic bone adjusted. Sounds odd, but it worked. Haven't really had the pain since then. Check out chiropractor!
