Will one 'vanish'???

My u/s today @ 7 weeks showed twins! But, one is smaller than the other and the MD said that it might 'vanish.' He also said that seeing the HB (for both) was a good sign when it comes to viabilitty. Did you have one twin that was smaller and questionable but continued to grow and be healthy? Just looking for some hope :)

Thanks!

a lot of twins are different sizes. do you know what gestational age each were measuring at? just measuring smaller isn't something that is definitive of outcome. unfortunately you'll probably just have to wait and see.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

Last ditch FET resulted in BFP, and identical twin girls!

I'd second this.  Did they tell you what the heartbeats for each baby are?   I'd ask more questions about what has your doctor specifically concerned about a vanishing twin.

Married 8/2008. IVF with PGD March 2013.
    3/22 ER: 25R, 20M, 15F. 9 genetically normal, and 3 survived to Day 5
    3/27 ET: transferred 1 embryo, beta 9dp5dt=163, 12dp5dt=639
4/25 1st ultrasound at 7 weeks = identical twins with heartbeats?!!!

  • My 7 week u/s also showed one smaller than the other, and that has continued into my now almost 15th week! They are measuring a week or so apart but both have heartbeats and seem to be doing fine so far! Congrats and good luck to you!!
  • My Baby B was always smaller than Baby A.  They are now healthy 9 month olds, and Baby B is 2 1/2 pounds bigger than Baby A!

  • My Baby B started out measuring a couple days behind A, then was continuously about 20 percent smaller...and today at almost 5 months is still 2 1/2 lbs smaller than his brother...but totally healthy. Seeing heartbeats is definitely a good sign.... gl!

  • My OB said the same thing to us when we found out at 6 weeks that it was twins.  He even told us not to tell anyone because the chances of losing one were high.  We went back at 10 weeks and both are growing normally and seem completely healthy.  Hang in there and wait til your next appointment.  He may have just been preparing you in case something does happen, just because you found out it was twins so early.
  • My US Tech said the same thing to me, my 'possible vanishing twin' is now sleeping soundly in his crib next to his brother. :)  Don't give up hope yet, and as IMPOSSIBLE as it is not to worry, try not to get too worked up about it.  And stay off of google. :)  Congrats on your twin news mama!

  • I heard the same thing at 6 weeks! Had my 17 week checkbyesterday, still a week behind baby a, but growing proportionally! Don't loose hope! As you can see from the replies, it's pretty common!

Thank you all!!! I was very happy to see the HB, but I am more confident now that we will get to see them both :)

    Thanks!

  • Yup, we were told the same thing at our first u/s (a little after 6 weeks) -- and given a 50/50 chance that Baby B might not hang out, and sure enough, she decided to stick around for the long haul. ;)

  • One of mine was measuring smaller and a few days behind at my first ultrasounds, but now at 26 weeks they are practically exactly the same size.  I think I posted a very similar question.  I kept trying to remind myself if one twin implanted a day or two behind, it can make a big difference at the beginning.  Good luck and congratulations!

At 7w0d, Baby B measured 6w5d but Baby A only measured 5w5d. It's really hard to tell on early ultrasounds, especially if they are high up in your uterus. By my 10w appointment with the OB, they were measuring the exact same size.

Now that Baby A is a full 2 lbs heavier than her sister. : )
