Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Coffee

Ok, I'm exhausted. but I'm afraid of making my EBF baby wired if I have some morning coffee.  I keep finding contradicting info about it, so I thought I'd see what other moms have experienced...Do you have coffee, if so how much and did you notice any impact on your LO? (I'm not talking about Starbucks here)

Re: Coffee

  • I drink at least two cups a day. No issues. But some babies can be gassy or have trouble sleeping. Check out the bf board, someone asked this yesterday and got lots if info.

  • I once read that it's more likely to affect your baby if you did not drink it while pregnant.  I drank coffee once I was out of the first tri and have a cup several times a week without a problem.
  • I couldn't have any caffeine during pregnancy (as per Dr because of a heart problem) and I occasionally have a tea or coffee now (1-2/week) with no apparent effect on LO.

  • I have coffee everyday - whether a cup at home or a grande latte from Starbucks. It has never had any effect on DD.

  • I drink two cups of strong, dark coffee (like Starbucks regular coffee) every morning and occasionally have a cup in the afternoon and haven't noticed an issue with it with any of my kids.

I don't function wo coffee. I have 1 a day on my way to work.
  • I have 2 cups a day. I have not noticed it impact my LO at all, unless I go above that amount or have coffee after 11. This is just plain old coffee from my house. I think moderation is key, just like any other food or drink (like alcohol).

  • I usually have 2 cups/day with no problems - I do however, make sure I have it in the AM before 3 pm so it doesn't affect him later during the day or interupt with his bedtime routine. Kellymom says it usually affects them 1-2 hrs. after ingestion.

I do this as well. There have been two times that I had coffee in the afternoon and didn't notice it bothering him at night or anything, but I was definitely wired at night haha.

I drink two cups a day and it doesn't affect my LO at all. I didn't drink any during pregnancy though.  When I started drinking it again, I did one cup half caf/half decaf to see if it would affect her at all.  We progressed p to my current amount over a few weeks.  You could try that.
  • I have two a day..one in the morning and another after lunch.  I cannot function without coffee.
  • I tried cutting it out for two weeks right after DS was born (I drank about 6oz a day during pregnancy) because I had read about it causing gassiness.  However, I did not see any difference in gas or sleep from the few days before I cut it out and when I started drinking it again.  I do still limit my caffeine intake but I do that by avoiding it after my second cup.

    Thanks, ladies!
  • I think, like everything else everyone is different. I didn't drink much caffeine while pregnant and stayed away from it the first few months but now that LO is 4 months I have to have my morning coffee. The few times have had one in the afternoon I have regretted. Although its hard to say if it is coincidence or something different as he is not a super sleeper as it is.

  • I drink coffee, tea, and sometimes soda. I usually have a cup of coffee or tea when I get up in the AM, before I get DD up (I usually wake her up around 5). If I have to work, I will have another cup on my way in (either a small cup of coffee I make at home or a latte if I stop). If I'm not working, I'll drink decaf coffee and tea throughout the day with my water. I also will drink 1 beer a day (not everyday). DD has done fine with it. We are giving her breastmilk and formula. DH thinks that the smell of coffee wakes DD up.
