Pumping Question

So it seems that pumping for me has been going really well and I have a lot of milk so far.  I was up to about 70-80 cc's/ml's at each session.  The last 2 times now though, I've dropped down to 60.  I'm guessing that this is a usual amount of variance between sessions, but was just looking for reassurance.

 Thanks!

Re: Pumping Question

  • May be a better question to ask on the BF board :

  • Are you pumping 100 percent or nursing too? If you are pumping exclusively, are you making sure you are doing so at least every 3 hours?

It will certainly vary by session but you might try drinking more water in between and upping your caloric intake.

I found that I would pump most at like 6 or so in the morning and it would go down during the day after that. Make sure you are drinking a lot of water and don't stress too much. I got so crazy with it I would write everything down and I was pumping like 40 ozs a day and then when dd did latch I had an oversupply.

I did cross post on the BF board after here, :) didn't think of it first. We are trying breastfeeding, but mostly pumping. So far only breastfed in one session yesterday. Yup, been pumping about every 3 hours, getting 8 times in a day. I'll make sure I get lots of water in today.

I produced the most milk in the early am. I produced the least amount at night before I went to bed. If you are drinking enough and making sure you are pumping at night, especially between 12 and 5 am when prolactin is the highest, I'd talk to a lactation consultant. I exclusively pumped and my lacatation consultant recommended that I take a calcium magnesium supplement to help with my supply. I also did make sure I ate real oatmeal or granola everyday. Good luck!

I produce the most overnight, then in the morning and then the least in the afternoon and evening.

This was how it went for me. I used to set an alarm to pump at 2 am when G started sleeping through the night to make up for the short supply I would produce during the day on work days. I used to get a ton overnight.
