Hi all,
My husband & I are scheduled to move to Memphis in early August. I'm currently about 15 wks, so I'm hoping I still have some time to find a good practitioner in the area. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good ob/gyn that is very adept at unmedicated, natural births or an excellent midwife? Ideally I'd like to find a situation where there is a birth center attached to a hospital where I can find a good midwife & have a doula present. Is this even possible in Memphis? Since I'm moving from Illinois, I haven't really checked what the options are here. I'm actually originally from NY and that's a very common option there. I just hoped that since Memphis is a semi-decent sized city, I'd be able to have some options too. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! ![]()

Re: Moving to Memphis
Good OBGYN: Dr. Crisler and Dr. Mann at MOGA. I have used Dr. Mann for all my babies. She is very laid back and will let you do whatever you want as long as baby is not in distress. She is very pro non-medicated natural and VBACs. I'm not to sure about Dr. Crisler but know she is a good Dr. AVOID DR. COUNCE - he is the reason I had a C-section with #2! We found out later that it wasnt neccessary!
As far as birth center I do not believe we have one. Given the choices of the hospitals in the area I would chose Methodist Germantown.
Hope this helps.
I LOVE my OB - she's a nurse practitioner, and NPs tend to be very okay with no interventions. She has never tried to talk me into anything! Dawna Willis at UT Medical Group.
She births at The Med, which has had quite the reputation because it's the only public hospital in Memphis. However, they have the best NICU in the state (just in case!), and their c-section rate is the lowest, at less than 1%, and the L&D nurses are the best and most accommodating around. There is no birth center, but I have heard of many women who have gone to The Med and opted for a more homebirth-like experience, which is what I'm going for - I'm due in October.
I think what you'll be able to do in the hospital just depends on your doctor. You'll probably have better chances at The Med because they simply take more chances than private hospitals.
I'd stay away from Baptist and St. Francis hospitals, if anything.
He's been my dr since I was 15 years old. I've had a ton of female problems and he's gotten me through them and to the other side. I've always been beyond thrilled with him. He delivered my sister's baby and the babies of two very close friends. They all went natural and didn't have csections. He'll be delivering mine this fall.
Whichever dr you decide on, MOGA is definitely the place to go.
As for hospitals, I would do either Methodist G'town or Baptist Women's Center.
Good luck!
