Pacifiers

My DS is pretty attached to his pacifier. We use a pacy clip so it's with him all the time.

Today we were playing outside so I took the pacifier away and he didn't seem to notice. But he wanted it for his nap.

I'm wondering though if I should start limiting his pacifier use. Maybe to just naps, bedtime, and the car?

What are you ladies doing about your LOs pacifier?

Jack was never a big fan. He only used it sporadically for the first few months. But he does have a lamb lovey who's ear he likes to suck on during naps and at bedtime. LOL

  • DS used his pacifier for naps and bedtime. I've never given it to him while he's awake and playing, although, I do give it to him if we are in the car and traveling for awhile. I say try it for naps and bedtime only and see how he does. He may not even notice.
  • DS is just a  nap and bedtime paci user, as well. I am wondering when to ditch it altogether.

  • I have cut it back to DD using it during naps and nighttime. But I am trying to decide to ditch the paci along with bottles when the time comes or do one at a time.

  • I'm going to try not having him wear it all the time and see how he does.

My SIL took her DD's paci away cold turkey when she turned 1 but I don't think my DS could handle that.

  • My DD never liked them so I can't give any personal experience however my aunt got rid of her kids when they were 1 1/2 and she did cold turkey.  She sent them to the pacifier fairy for the new babies .  I thought it was pretty clever and if DD liked them I would have done the same.

    That's a good idea!

My mom did something similar when I was little. We mailed them to Santa so I could get big girl presents.

  • Parker never really got attached to them, and now he uses them as a toy to "pop" between his teeth! LOL I think he likes the sound it makes!

  • DDs is usually on a clip but to limit the hair on it now that she's mobile (eww) I usually take it off and she doesn't seem to care.  Trying to limit to naps and bedtime and it's gone well thusfar.

  • DS was never really a big fan of Paci's but he is a thumb sucker. He doesn't constantly suck on his thumb so I am not going to worry about it just yet.

This is us as well. She definitely uses it to soothe herself so not sure how/when to get rid of it and what that will mean for her sleep.

Next week when DD turns one I'm going to start limiting to just naps, bedtime, and in the car. I think it'll be harder on me than it is on her. It's nice having the paci to calm her down in a restaurant. :P

  • The nurse at our pedi office said you should stop using it at 6-9 mos as they "don't need it any longer."  I really don't feel like stopping it yet though.  I guess I don't see the harm yet.  He is a pretty verbal little guy, but I do think if he has the paci in he isn't babbling so maybe I will start letting him use it less during the day for this reason.  I also leave a whole bunch in his crib for him to find at night so he can soothe himself back to sleep.
