Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Milk question...?

I know some of your LO's are almost 1 but since jumping over here it sounds like a lot of moms are introducing whole cows milk before 1 year? I'm just wondering why you would do this? I'm not trying to judge but I was told by our pedi that breastmilk and or formula is babies most important source of nutrition until 1 year. That you are suppose to offer BM/formula first and then solids AFTER and that babies don't need solids until after 1 year, that they are just practice. So why would you chose to give your LO whole cows milk over BM or formula? And why would you give them more solids than BM or formula? Seems like you would be depriving your baby of the nutritients they need...right? I'm just confused, maybe someone can fill me in if I'm missing something?

Because we talk to our pedis just like you talk to yours.

The introduction of WCM and the replacement of feedings with WCM are two different things... we opted to introduce WCM ie an ounce here or there 2 weeks before LO's first birthday. She is still only getting 2 ounces of it a day, along with 8 ounces of breastmilk and 2 nursing sessions.nbsp; One isn't a magical age where suddenly babies transform solids should gradually increase and milk intake gradually decrease from, say, 910 months, until sometime after the first birthday.nbsp; My LO dropped a daycare bottle of her own accord, in favor of eating more solids, around 11 months.nbsp; I think it's important to let your baby tell you what he or she needs rather than just going by a book... some babies will prefer BM to real food for a 2nd year, while others prefer solids.

    Gotcha.

  • I haven't introduced milk at all yet but I have done cooked veggies.  I would think that the veggies have a good amount of nutrients.

  • I have a friend that ran out of formula two weeks before her LO's bday.  She said she didn't want to buy a new thing of formula.  But her LO was eating like 3 full meals by that point.

Yes I am going to wait as close to 1yr as possible- but since we are on formula, and its so expensive- Id rather not use formula as soon as I can.

Lol.  BF moms who work have to pump 40-60 minutes a day to feed their babies (if not more)...and you're complaining about the cost of formula?

I BF too, but this comment is about to stir some trouble.  Lets not get on the FF baby vs BF baby debate.

turning 1 is not a magical day where you can all of a sudden switch to cows milk from forumla or bm.  It is a transition.  It is OK to start a few weeks early.  Their stomachs are more than likely able to handle cows milk by this point.

Like PP have said, it really depends on the baby and the pediatrician.  My LO was BF but started to really thrive on solids (consistently started gaining more weight, etc) at about 7 months.  At our 9month appointment, her pediatrician and I agreed that her digestion seemed to be mature much earlier than 1 year to switch to a predominently solids and WCM diet so that's what we ended up doing.  At 10 months we started replacing her BF/Formula (I'm pregnant so my BF supply tanked and I had to start to supplement) with WCM and just now reached the point where she is completely on WCM (at almost 11 months).  We do give her vitamins every day as well.

One years old is not a magical age, some babies are ready earlier and some aren't ready until later.

I will also add that one of our reasons for switching early was that she started to refuse bottles of formula but would guzzle down a bottle of WCM.

I'm not getting the point of your call out. You either have to give up time or give up money.

Totes lurking and coming out of lurking. As someone who FF I can tell you it's expensive. As sometime who attempted pumping/BF I can tell you pumping is a PITA. FF =/= easier than BF. BF =/= easier than FF. Both have their costs, whether in time or money.

As for the OP, we worked on replacing bottles with meals around 11m. I noticed they were never finishing their late afternoon bottle, so I just dropped it. Eventually we were doing meals, but still doing morning and night bottles of formula. Around 13m we ran out of formula and so our bottles are now WCM. We only do a bottle before bed. They get sippy cups of water or WCM throughout the day, but more water than WCM. HTH.

Edited because I tried to post from my phone and it sucked.

This. I introduced WCM after my son turned 11 months because we had been supplementing with about 7 ounces of formula a day and the box ran out. Since he was so close to 1, I decided to just buy WCM instead. He turns 1 next week and I plan to start weaning in a couple of days. I generally follow my son's lead. He loves real food and has been much more interested in it than nursing for months now, so it has gradually become the primary and that is fine per our pede.

Wow. Really? Try 1400 dollars this year. I would love to spend an hour a day preventing that cost and providing better nutrition for my baby.

Considering there is no magical gut reform on their first birthday, Im fine with giving him a bottle or 2 of WCM a day. He eats like a champ.

    oh the sanctimony

OP: it depends on the baby and what he's eating/drinking, which is why it goes back to an individual conversation with your pedi. The transition away from a singular, fortified food source is a continuum.

Wow, where did that come from???

  • every pedi will say something different, however my pedi told us at our nine month appointment to make sure she is getting 2-3 meals of solids a day.  we definately do two meals a day and sometimes three.  the other feeding times she is getting formula.  at age one we will switch to WCM and put it in a sippy rather than a bottle.  she has been taking a sippy since 6 months so that won't be an issue.

THIS. We started weaning and doing half and half. My boys will be one first week of June.

Some of us are a little excited about being done with formula. I have twins and it's expensive as hell. I can't wait to be done with it and put that money towards something else. ::GASP::. Go ahead and clutch your pearls. Lets not make this a BF vs FF please.  I started weaning and doing half and half two weeks before there first birthday. Big woop. Our pedi said it was fine.
