My dear dear grandmother is named Alice, I love her name, I think it is super cute and I am seriously considering it for our girl name. My DH thinks it sounds like an old lady name and prefers Alise to Alice. I love Alise -but I prefer the spelling of Elise. However, our last name starts with W and I don't really want to give a girl the initials of EW.

 

So what would you do, I feel that all three names would be homage to my grandmother, but do you prefer Alice, Alise or Elise (EW)

 

I am leaning towards Alice but I don't know if I can convince DH- that being said I really wasn't given much of a choice with DS's name because it was so important to dh so maybe I should not consider his opinion at all

I prefer Elise or Elyse.  I would have never thought of the inital thing.  You could always use Alice as a middle name if YH won't agree.

I prefer Elise and EW doesn't bother me.  Chances are, if she takes her husband's last name, she'll spend more years of her life with a last name other than the W maiden name.

Alice is timeless to me, not "old lady" at all! I've always thought of that as a very classic feminine name!  Very pretty!

I'm not as big on Alise/Elise, but I think that's because I knew a girl in hs by that name who I didn't like at all lol!

Alice is lovely! But if you can't convince DH, I'd probably go for Elise, just because Alise looks a little made-up and I'd worry people thought it was a typo.

I LOVE Alice! AND Elise- but Alise made me think you were just trying to get kreative with Alice...I didn't even get Elise out of it..)

 I don't think it is old lady- I think it is classic!

We just had the same dilema, my Grandmother's name was Alice and we were going to use Elise as her middle name but it is actually a form of Elizabeth so we just went with Alice instead. It is a classic name and I wouldn't worry about the initials.

What about Alison?  Otherwise, I would use Alice as a middle name or go with Elise.  The EW thing isn't so bad.

I think Alice is fine...but considering I have an Elise, I'm biased toward that choice.  :-)

 

Honestly, unless you were going with Olga or Helga, old names don't sound old anymore because that is sort of "trendy" right now.

The reaction I get to Alice on here is much different than in real life! I have loved the name for a long time but I always get the side eye when I mention it! This has actually convinced me to push DH harder since I really do love it. BTW I usually tell people who give me looks about it that it is Tina Fey's daughter's name and that shuts them up because obviously, she is the bees knees.

I would use it as a middle name.  But, Elise is my favorite.

I love Elise, but because of your grandmother I would go with Alice.  Alice is a timeless, classic name that fits with the trend of using classic, old fashioned names.  I really like Alice and it would be such a statement of love to use it!

I love Alice!  I think it's really pretty.  Go for it!

I love Alice too, but DH wouldn't go for it because of the maid on the Brady Bunch (dumb).  I really dislike Alise--it looks like you didn't know how to spell Alice and I don't even get Elise out of it.  Elise is ok, but reminds me of Family Ties (do I watch too much TV?!?).  Go with Alice!!

LOVE the name Alice!  Love it.

 I think Alise looks made up, so if you can't convince DH, I'd got with Elise.  But Alice is my #1 pick for a girl's name.

I think Alice is cute and really like the idea of naming her after your grandmother.  That being said, I love the name Elise!  I don't think the initials EW are that bad if you went with Elise.  I went to high school with a girl named Alyse which could be another option if you really don't like EW.

I prefer Elise in terms of names, but if you really want to honor your grandma I would go Alice.
